Does anyone know where I can find the dates for orientation for OOS Fall 2009?

Thanks.

You will recieve this info in the mail after you complete the placement tests online. It is sometime during the summer, between May and Aug, no special dates for OOS students

My son is doing the LEAP program this summer. Do they do the orientation for LEAP students for the fall while they are there for the summer program or does it still fall between May and August?

He will do his FTCAP/orientation before he starts LEAP. (You only do it once - there’s no separate one for summer and fall.)

So momwriter does that mean sometime in may or june he will have to go to psu and have his orientation? He will be filling out the online testing this week. He has to be at psu up by june 28 and since may and june are filled with high school testing, ap exams, prom and graduation we were wondering if he gets to choose when he has to go? Since his classes for leap have already been selected, it seams it would make more sense to do the orientation while he is there for Leap. if anyone could clear this up it would be apppreciated. Thanks.

Yep, that’s right - he’ll be going for his on-campus part of FTCAP before LEAP starts. My S did LEAP last year (and my second S is doing it this year). I believe his on-campus stuff last year was the last week of May or first week of June.

Unfortunately, they can’t wait and do this once LEAP starts becuase there are things that need to be done before they move in and start classes, such as setting up their student account/e-mail and getting briefed on the dorm/campus rules and policies.

I know that in special circumstances (such as if the student lives outside the U.S.) they do make exceptions, but otherwise I think they expect you to attend the on-campus stuff.

Dear Momwriter,
Thanks for the info. Did your first S enjoy LEAP? My son wasn’t happy about having to start LEAP 2 days after graduation, but wanted PSU UP so badly that he was willing to do it. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. My son is a crime, law and justice major.

One bit of advice would be to make sure he has stuff to do with his time. In the summer, kids have a lot of free time on thier hands since they are only taking two classes. If he isn’t into partying or doesn’t know anyone on campus, he might get bored and/or homesick. This is especially true during the first week, because classes don’t actually start until three days after move-in day. On the other hand, if he is into partying, he might end up spending too much time socializing and not enough time studying.

One other thing about LEAP: during one of the orientation sessions, a PSU rep had told us that the kids live with the rest of their LEAP pride. This turned out to be untrue: nobody else from my S’s pride was in the same dorm as he was; they were scattered among all the dorms/halls.

My S also did LEAP last summer and was very unhappy about graduating and then leaving for college shortly after that, but…it was the best thing ever for him. He made friends that he still has now and they all ended up rushing and pledging the same fraternity. In restrospect, he says that he would have been anxious to start college anyway, so why not start a bit early?
He did FTCAP in late May. The original date they gave us didn’t work (again with prom, school musical, graduation) and PSU was very cordial in changing the date and working with us to find one that was a better fit.
Enjoy your PSU experience…for my S, it truly has been happy Valley.

Dear Bdwaymom,
Thanks for your input. I feel a liitle better knowing they were flexible with the dates. Also from what we heard pretty much everyone we have seen post on this board has said what a good experience LEAP was. It’s good to hear that your son’s experience was postive also.
