Supp everyone :]
My name is Kara and I am officially going to UCR! I am jubilant but a bit disappointed about my orientation. I signed for the 7/18-7/19 and they gave me the 7/25-7/26 dates instead. I am a bit worried about whether I will be able to acquire a certain amount of classes such as at least three or four (my teacher has drilled it in our heads that we can graduate in three). So, will this really have any affect at all on the registration process? It isn't the latest of the dates but it isn't the earliest. :/
If you also share this date, hit me up :]
Please list your dates and tell me why you chose those specific dates over the other given ones.
Thanks.

Mine’s the 8/26 one, but I have no choice since my major’s in the College of Engineering and it’s the only date for engineers. Are you majoring in engineering, or no? That could explain it. I’m pretty worried about getting the classes I need, too, though.

I am going on 8/26 too. I am a theatre major. I have the same worries about getting my classes too. I picked it because it was the earliest of dates available. :

I am in the CHASS college but majoring in law and society/political science (most likely will switch). They have orientations running that late?

Mines is on July 18/19. CHASS. I heard that each date is only allowed to book so many students in certain classes so that every student in other dates can get a chance? I’m not sure though.

if i remember correctly, they save a certain amount of spots for the popular class for each orientation so that ppl who go on a later days can still get those classes.

Nyancat: August 26?? Is that for transfers? I don’t see any sessions on that date. Bourns has lots of sessions for freshman, I’m going to the second one 7/15-7/16. Glad I signed up early, the first four sessions are totally full for all colleges! I looked at the classes I’m supposed to take and my computer lab is already full. I’m assuming that’s because continuing students are signing up for it. Hopefully they add more classes for freshman!!

So anyway, here’s the current list of sessions, the first 4 are full already:

They have a unit cap of 16 units for sophomores, juniors, and seniors set up specifically so that everybody, even freshmen will get at least a full courseload of 12 units (three standard four unit classes), so you shouldn’t worry about not being able to get enough classes.

and the unit cap of 16 units does not apply after everybody has registered for at least 5, and haha438 is right from what i remember from last year.

I really want to take four classes, at the most five-seems a bit difficult.

good luck getting that many with the unit cap. it’s difficult to even get four classes given that many classes are 5 units, making you stuck with just 13 or 14 units. Like this quarter, I could only get three classes at 13 units, although im hopeful ill get to enroll in a fourth class after the incoming freshmen class enrolls, and im also hoping to enroll in hnpg98, which will make my existing internship worth 4 units for honors, which will end me with a total of 22 units.

for my first three quarters, honors lifted my unit cap so i was pretty lucky. i took four classes (15 units) in fall, five classes (18 units) in winter, and five classes (18 units) in spring and it was fine. i managed a 3.713, 3.859, and im expecting around a 3.6 respectively. although fall quarter i took a 2 unit class, and winter and spring i took a 1 unit class…five full 4-5 unit classes would be really hard, but four is fine. i did four twice with an additional small class and im doing fine, so you can do it!

I hope I get at least four. So, does Orientation actually acts like a catalyst in fraternizing with other college freshmen?

sort of. keep in mind that it’s only two days, so you’re probably not going to meet your life long friends. i only still talk to one girl from my orientation group at all, and we haven’t talked or seen each other in awhile. and i literally met my roommate for five minutes when we were leaving the room haha. i made more friends during SUHP (summer university honors program)

If you accept the learning community they offer you, your guaranteed for your major specific classes. Then you just need to look for English and breadth classes. English inst too hard to get, you just might not get the time you want. There’s plenty of breadth classes available, you just might not get your first choice.

SO…Are we suppose to know which classes we wish to register before orientation?

No, but you can look them up at your majors department website if your curious. You have this sit down session where your in a room for like 2 hours choosing your classes and alternatives before you actually go into the computer lab and register. So someone else in your orientation might get the spot you wanted.

You can go to [UC Riverside - Schedule of Classes](<a href=“Select a Term”>http://classes.ucr.edu/) to get an idea of which classes are still available and which are the ones you wish to enroll in, so you do not have to sit there for hours debating on which classes you should take. But keep in mind that they may or may not fill up by the time your registration time comes about.

I also have 7/25-7/26…I dont think it should be a worry for what classes we pick…in any case have a second choice class…it never hurts to have a plan B

Yeah…my sister is in a CCC, so I have an understanding of how difficult it is to enroll in classes with the amount of students. Are you excited? :D

i have orientation on july 15/16 (spanish one) & i believe it’s the 3rd orientation date, so you should be able to get your classes since you will be only the 4th orientation date (:

Dont worry too much, if you are a first year, half of your schedule is made for you before Orientation (Math and English) and the other half are reserved for freshman. Most intro level classes have spots open, but say they are full on the class listings because these are reserved for the freshman. (I couldnt get the ethnic studies class I needed even though there were 170 seats open because its an intro class reserved for freshman). Orientation is the ONLY time as freshman that you guys have priority over other grades. A regular quarter would mean that students with the most credits sign up first.

Finally, if you are a first year, you will most likely be placed into a learning community so it would be hard to take 4 classes because of the learning community classes and although there is a 16 unit cap, they lift this sometime in september, but then again, whoever has most credits get first priority.
