Orientation II: June 13-16

who all is going to Orientation II: June 13-16? i'm going.. plan II and bhp.

anyone who went to orientation I (june 6) have any pointers, etc? a friend who when to the 1st one told me it's pretty laid back and chill.

i'm excited about orientation!!! i wanna get some more burnt orange tees, but my mom complains that i already have plenty of t-shirts, and she doesn't like the color burnt orange. hah.

i'll be there! i'm goin up on monday night and am excited...do you know if we have to take the sat II tests? i'm confused on this whole testing thing...

yea, same here, anne2006. do business people have to take the computer proficiency test?

oh i'm going up monday morning.. haha it's 11 and i still need to pack. lol.

you need to take sat II tests there (ie. writing) if you want to claim credit/ advance placement into another course.

yea, you need the comp prof test to take a business course. a guy from bhp told me not to take it at orientation. he said he failed it when he took it a couple years back.. lol. i guess its harder than it sounds? unless u do the review online or whatever. but he said that they have tutorial sessions u can take, and then u can take the comp prof test later on (like up to some number of days after you are enrolled in a bus course)

see everyone this tues!

how many people were at this orientation? I'm trying to get an estimate for my orientation.

i'm not sure exactly how many but i heard it is roubgly 13,000 people spread out over 8 orientations. (that comes out to 1625, which i would say is pretty accurate)

anyone have questions? i just got back from orientation today (i stayed w/ a friend for an extra night).

Yeah I got some. You said they spread everyone out? Is it similar to if you are in McCombs you go to that group or whatever? Also did you stay on campus for residence? If so did you stay by yourself or did you have to have a roommate? Were you active and doing things most of the time or was it more lax?

grandpabuzz, i also went to this orientation. when you arrive there are two "stations". in the first one you get a bunch of papers youll need later in the week. after that youll go to check in for a room (if youre living at jester). the way you get your roommate is whoever is next to you in line. so if youre planning to live with a friend make sure you stand in line with them. the room you get will determine your "wing" which is your group. throughout the week youll only be with your group about twice a day. there are only about 3-4 mandatory meetings each day and besides that you can do whatever you want and go wherever you want. there are many optional meetings everyday (except for the last day--thats when you register for classes) and i would reccommend you go to as many as possible just to see whats up at UT. thats about it. if you have anymore questions, drop a line.

Did you fly or drive there? If you took a plane did it take long to get from the airport to UT assuming you took a bus or cab?

i drove. however i know that there is a bus that goes from UT to the airport. its called the airport flier (or something like that) and it picksup in front of the stadium across the street from the san jacinto dorms

well, anyone can sign up for whatever orientation they want until the spots fill up. so there could be more business majors at one orientation than another. i know that people doing like plan2, bhp, architecture, etc. are limited to specific orientation sessions where their majors are offering an advising session. other than that, people go to whatever they felt like signing up for.

if you're wondering about registration. what matters more is your alpha split by last name. They save a certian number of slots for each orientation, and then they let A-J, then H- ?, then ?+1 - Z go. i was H- ?, but i waited in line like an hour before my time started and i managed to get all the classes i wanted.

some ppl said that orientation was lax, if you're a double major, you'll probabbly be a little busier planning your schedule, etc. it also helps to know all you AP/transfer credit scores, etc.

i'd say that orientation is what you make of it. not much is mandatory except the wing mtgs, the advising mtgs, and some of the programs.. other than that, if you wanna learn about traditions, student clubs, etc you'll go to those mtgs.

I hope everyone knows that they can go online and look up their professors. PPL say pickaprof is good but UT offers a free service where it lists the survey results about a professor. although it doesn't list the grades like pickaprof does, it is free. go to UT direct, then search for CIS. ppl say that using both CIS and pickaprof together are good.

anything else ya'll wanna know?

the course instructor survey (CIS) is great, and I highly recommend everyone use it. pickaprof is nice if you are a grade whore.
