Orientation necessary?

Is orientation necessary?

I only ask this because I will need a flight to catch the same day orientation takes place, August 22nd. It's my first cousins wedding and neither of his mother(can't get a visa) or father(deceased) can make it. I seen him every handful of years and I would feel like an a hole for missing it. So could I pass it up? I'd probably be back by Monday or Tuesday. I'd take care of courses during the week. I will be on campus during the week of registration.

Thanks

IMO orientation is essential. This is where like 75% of people meet their core group of friends. I wouldn't miss it.

Aside from meeting people, what else will I be missing? Anything crucial.

I'm a transfer anyways, so it'll be hard and I've accepted it.

what college/major are you transferring into? when it comes closer to orientation time, you'll have to see what the itinerary is for that day and if you have any required meetings figure out how to make them up (i.e. meet with advisor)

In orientation you schedule classes/meet with your advisor and these things are pretty crucial. Theres also lots of information sessions/social events, which are very helpful but not necessary. Soon you'll get an itinerary and contacted by your Orientation Leader, so you can see the schedule then, and decide if its worth it. If you do decide to miss a day, and just give your OL a heads up that you're missing part of it, so they'll be aware of that and can fill you in on what you missed.

Agree with Quick - Transfers need orientation too... I would try to go to orientation. You can always make up the "school stuff", but imho solidifying and forming relationships during that week is extremely important to your adjustment.

I can go Saturday or Friday night. I'll also need to move in and annoy my roomies.

Thanks fellas/fellies.
