Orientation Placement tests

@FutureEEmajor
similar situation happened with my friends. one of them started at 21B, one at 21C, and one at 21D. they all could’ve started at 21D but their orientation leader made the first guy start at 21B, and he had to talk the guy out of making him start at 21A!
after you go through registration with your orientation leader, you can change it. if your OL suggests you don’t take it, you can probably change it at your discretion(after orientation, heh) if you’re qualified. it’s on YOU if you can’t handle it though, keep that in mind.
@possible
i don’t know about awpe since i tested out of it. but yeah i remember sitting for the chem and math ones, so there are at least two test periods.
oh, and i came in as a bio sci major so i had to take the chem test. i don’t know if non science majors have to :/

I’m under environmental management as of now… will I have to take Chem? & How long are each tests?

Incoming Freshmen will be notified in late May about the Math Placement Examination. They will be sent instructions and login information via email to their UC Davis email address.

The testing sessions for incoming Freshmen will be:

College of Letters and Science…June 7th - June 16th
College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences…June 21st - June 30th
College of Biological Sciences…July 5th - July 14th
College of Engineering…July 19th - July 28th

You must satisfy the MPR if you wish to enroll in MAT 12, 16A, 17A, 21A, 21AH, or 36 as outlined in the following table:

Course…Math Placement
…Exam Total…with Trigonometry
…Score…Sub-Score
========…============…=============
MAT 12…25 or more…-------------
MAT 16A…30 or more…with 2 or more
MAT 17A…30 or more…with 2 or more
MAT 21A…35 or more…with 3 or more
MAT 21AH…50 or more…with 3 or more
MAT 36…25 or more…-------------

Students enrolled in one of the above classes without satisfying the MPR will be administratively dropped from the course no matter what anyone else, including an adviser or an instructor, may have told them. No exceptions to this policy are permitted.

A question about the placement exam. Do transfer students also have to take it? I passed Calculus 1 at my CC with a C (and Assist says my Calc class is the equivalent of both 16A and 21A), so I don’t have to take the math placement exam in order to take 21B, do I?

Also, what is 21B like? The course description says it covers “definition of definite integral, fundamental theorem of calculus, techniques of integration. Application to area, volume, arc length, average of a function, improper integral, surface of revolution”, but the funny thing is, I learned all that in my Calculus 1 class. Calculus II at my CC covers what UC Davis covers in 21C. I wouldn’t mind refreshing myself on some of those concepts (especially surface of revolution), but would it be harder?

i doubt transfers have to take it, especially if you’ve taken the equivalent to 21a and want to take 21b. you should look into it though.
harder? if you learned the 21b material in your calc 1 class and calc 2 = 21c, then it should be apparent that 21b will be easy for you. if you’re talking about relative difficulty in terms of speed, teaching, curves, exams etc. then we can’t really tell you since we don’t know where you went to CC and even if we did we probably didn’t go there, lol.

Does anyone know how many problems there are on the test? If you need a 25-50 points to pass…how many points is it out of?

Math - 60 points possible, Chem - 44 points possible
Trig Subscore - 7 points possible

Just out of curiosity, will there be questions like “convert 36 inches into miles” er such on the Chemistry test? And if there are, then does that mean we should have memorized the conversion measurements or do they tell us how many inches are in one mile?

OK… I don’t know the answer… but Chemistry is all about memorizing conversions. I would be totally surprised if they gave any of those.

All the placement tests are really easy. If you want the honors classes, you should probably look over the chem/math a little. Otherwise, its basic and id say the majority of people should just relax.

Dang i couldn’t do like 50% of the problems…
