so question... at orientation, do we actually have to schedule an appointment with our advisor or do we just show up? if the former, any idea how we do that?

During the summer you'll get a letter telling you who your advisor is and you may get a time assigned to you (apparently, some people just get their advisor's name; some get a name and a time, but no place, etc.) You'll then need to email your advisor and set up your meeting if it hasn't been already, or confirm if it has. If your advisor's contact info isn't on the letter, look them up online by going to his/her department's webpage.
I believe this same letter will tell you who your student advisor is, but just so you know, student advisors are totally worthless and the meetings are a waste of time.(Have a question about anything? Ask your RA).

i got the letter a couple days ago and it gave me my adviser's name and a time/place for the appointment. if you werent assigned a time/place, probably the best thing to do would be to look up your adviser's email and try emailing them to set up a time.

hmm ok. so student advisors and RAs aren't the same thing? RAs are obvioulsy in the resident hall. and i know you said student advisors are useless, but what was their intended purpose?

I think they are there to guide u thru the process. I feel like RAs keep an eye on u and ur dorm while sometimes creating bonding activities while student advisers get directly involved in ur life on campus to make sure u r comfortable w/ the change and everything.
