Orientation question

Do people typically bring families to this? In addition to our son starting UF, we have three younger daughters. Are there any family activities or should they stay home? Do many parents even attend?

I would recommend they stay at home. I brought my younger sister and brother to orientation, and they were bored out of their minds. There are special workshops for the parents that they had to sit through, and lots of campus tours. While the students are off doing their thing, UF keeps the parents involved in discussions and information sessions…but these aren’t super kid friendly!

Keep them at home unless they are old enough to hang out at the motel pool. You’re spending the night, right?

I went with my son last year. Bored out of my mind. There were parents draped all over the furniture napping.

Is it vital for parents go to the orientation? Will they miss a lot if I’ll go there by myself?

No, it’s not vital for parents to attend, especially if your student already is independent and can handle most things on his/her own. Most of the material is geared toward orienting the students and getting them registered for classes. I think it’s interesting for most parents, but certainly not necessary for them.
