Hi,

I'm not going to be home for any of the July orientation dates, so I'm probably gonna have to go to the one in mid August. Now my only concern is that Im wondering if I will get "last dibs" on choosing my classes, since everyone would have chosen their classes in July. Is this true? Or does it not matter when you go...

Thanks

Hi! My name is Rob and I’m a Binghamton University Student Ambassador.

Not really. You will be registering later than other freshmen, but the university blocks seats in many of the most popular classes that freshmen need to take for later orientation sessions. Some of the popular classes that will have a certain number of seats held for each orientation session include the introductory courses to any of the hard sciences (biology, chemistry, physics), introductory courses in many of the other popular academic departments (economics, for instance), Calculus I/II, and Writing 111, which is essentially freshmen writing. So if you’re looking to take some of the very popular classes, then you will be at no disadvantage at all. If you’re looking at a more obscure class that is not normally popular among freshmen, you may wind up getting “last dibs” in regards to those (but those classes are also less likely to close up if they had seats open).

So, basically, if you’re worried about being closed out of a class that you really MUST take your freshmen year, like the prerequisite courses for your major, then you won’t have any problems at all. You may have slightly more limited selection among the less popular and non-required courses, though.

Let me know if you have any other questions!
