Orientation Question

OK - my DD is signed up for orientation (about 2 weeks ago). I thought it said that she would receive an email with details of the orientation and she has not received anything. She is going the first week of June. I just wanted to make sure we didn't miss the email. Has anyone else received an email with details?

My s is signed up for the Memorial Day session (5/27), taking the foreign language placement on that Sunday before and we haven’t received anything yet. I suspect that won’t come until closer to the time.

OK - thanks. My DD is also signed up the day before to take a French test. I will be patient! I just am an organizer and like to have information early!

USC information system is archaic it is so hard to be informed about anything signing into my Carolina or VIP is so differcult and when you call the staff is nasty

^^Sorry you haven’t gotten answers you need. Do you still need to set up accounts? It is confusing, but once set up, it’s just a username and password like any other system. I have spoken with lots of departments in last few weeks (D1 taking summer school class here) and everyone has been very helpful. Remember the system is switching. After this fall VIP will just be a number, but for now current students have some of stuff there and some on mysc. Summer school students still on VIP and incoming fall class is all mysc. D2 is current student and has fall registration on mySC and may term on VIP and financial info in both places.

Best advice is to call with specific questions since lots of FAQs still have info that applies to using VIP rather than mySC.

thanx scmom12

This isn’t related to the first question in this thread but still an orientation question… Do we need to go to orientation prepared to pay for the stuff we sign up for? - meal plan, parking, books? anything else?? (what else is there you can take care of at orientation?) Just trying to figure out if I need to break into the ole’ college fund yet or can wait for the bill (in July I assume?).

Also, ours is next weekend- Memorial Day and we still haven’t gotten any information on it, unless they post that online?

Do parents go to the orientation? What do they do during the orientation? Do they stay with the students or do something separate?

Some students go without parents. Students and parents are together for opening talks in the morning. Then students leave with their college/major to do specific orientation and advisement. Parents are also divided by college/major and go to sessions about that college so they have an idea what the students are hearing. Parents and students eat in same place, but not together. After lunch there is time to look at displays, pay for parking stickers, etc. You may have some time with student then. Parents have optional sessions to attend in afternoon (study abroad, greek life…that kind of stuff) while students continue with advisement. At some point you meet up again and can do dorm or campus tour if needed. You can also pick up carolina card during orientation. So it’s not necessary to go with your student, but it’s nice if you’re not familiar with campus and as a chance to meet other parents and students.

Do we sign up for meal plans and parking at orientation? And if so, do we need to go to orientation prepared to pay for the stuff we sign up for? - meal plan, parking, books? anything else?? (what else is there you can take care of at orientation?) Just trying to figure out if I need to break into the ole’ college fund yet or can wait for the bill (in July I assume?).

Most things that you pay for will be released on the bill that comes out in July. I don’t think they set most fees (tuition, housing, meals, etc) until the official university meeting in June or July, so I’m not sure that you can pay for much at orientation.

You can go ahead and order books, but I personally would wait until classes start. Every semester I have professors who don’t even use the textbook or they allow (if not encourage) using an older addition. Waiting can literally save you hundreds of dollars. Students also try to sell all of their books at the beginning of the school year over Facebook and you can usually pay a lot less by buying directly from other students.

Typically, they don’t charge for books until much closer to the actual start of classes, not when you order them. Textbooks change and are updated fairly often throughout the summer. Your meal plan will be a part of your student’s fall bill. And I have no idea about parking, because I’ve never actually dealt with that, but I know you can call Parking and sign up that way.

Yes you can pay for parking at orientation but not much else.

My daughter is signed up for orientation for this Friday (in two days) and has yet to receive an email with details. Has anyone else received this information?

I think you should have gotten something by now. Can you see it under her mysc? Have you check campus email? I would call first thing tomorrow.

My d is signed up for orientation later in June on the 18 th and we recd an email yesterday confirming the same with parking instructions etc.

Thanks for the information. We will call in the morning to find out whats going on. This is for the Honors College Orientation session so I don’t know if that makes a difference but I still think we should have received an email.

^^that shouldn’t make a difference. Honors is just a breakout session like the ones for other majors

She’s also a recruited athlete so she is enrolling in a Summer II class as well as fall classes. Since these are on two different systems that could be part of the problem. The honors college called us last week and said we weren’t signed up for orientation. My wife gave them the orientation confirmation number and they checked and said they found her in the “other” system. I’m concerned she’s fallen through the cracks somewhere along the way.

We had our orientation on Monday and only got an email confirmation of the date (no parking or agenda included). We found out at the hotel that check in begins at 7:30 AM at the Koger Center (next to the Carolina Coliseum). The Koger Center had all the May dates on their signage so it’s most likely the same for you - 7:30 AM check in time.

Aside from the lack of sufficient notification on the meeting place, the orientation was very organized and useful. They separate the students and parents as previously mentioned for breakout sessions and we regroup at the end for the dorm tour. My son walked away with his dorm assignment, complete class schedule, and his Carolina card. He met a bunch of other students and is very excited to start.

My son will be attending the transfer orientation tomorrow (Friday, May 31st). I did not sign up or pay the additional fee to attend the orientation (he’s our third and we’re all very familiar with USC). Am I able to go in with him at 7:30am for the initial welcome, etc… and then leave when the actual orientation sessions begin?
