Hey guys, I'll be going to Orientation 110 this weekend. Do any of you know when it will end, if it starts on Sunday, the 27th? Also, I totally forgot to sign up for place ment exams. Are they required if you didn't get a ridiculously high score on the SAT's. And lastly, how was it? Was it a fun experience where you met a lot of people? Or were you busy getting from one place to the next? Thanks for all the help guys!

It'll end on the 29th around 6 pm, if you're a freshmen. If you're a transfer, it ends later that day [not sure about the time]. The exams are required for placement into the math/foreign language classes. You can probably just show up and take them though. I don't think they checked your name off lists or anything [someone correct me if I'm wrong]. Or just log onto myucla.edu and sign up now. Orientation was really fun but tiring! The room gets cold at night, so turn the AC all the way down. Even though most of the events are optional, you should go for the experience & to get acquainted with the school and its resources & to meet new people. There's plenty of time to just hang with friends.

Sweet! Is the Math Placement exam hard? I only go to Pre cal in high School, so I am pretty rusty from Junior Year. What should i study? Thanks again Evelyn!

they don't check for your name during the placement exams. this makes me wonder if we could have slipped by without paying to take the exam.

unless you love the cold, you might want to bring an extra blanket so you can be warm. and i agree with evelyn_rose, attend ALL the events. you can always hang out whenever you want. oh yeah, consider what classes you want to take NOW so you won't be cramming it all in on the second day and be late to carpe noctem.

have fun!

Definitely plan on what classes you want to sign up for. I regret it and I was late for carpe noctem (the scavenger hunt)..it wasn't so fun rushing to finalize my schedule.

The math placement exam is similar to this:

http://mdtp.ucsd.edu/crtest/

On the first day, you will be listening to multiple speeches and will hang out with your Orientation Counselor and group. On the second day, you'll be free to attend workshops - you set your own schedule. The third day, you will be involved with a tour and a couple more speeches.

I notice that people were really clique-y (they came with their old friends with HS). :( In this sense, it kinda takes away from the "I know nobody lets make new friends" part of attending college. Oh well.

unless there's only 2 ppl from your hs attending that particular orientation... i actually merged into a group of ppl from san fran, who all went to the same hs. we had the bay area in common and that worked out nicely.
if all else fails, make friends when you're standing in line for diddy riese!

so does anyone know if you're allowed to leave early on the third day like after registering for classes? because i'm coming from norcal, and we'd like to avoid traffic since we need to back home pretty quick.

Yes, you can leave early. It's no problem.

Well that's nice to know. I can't wait for orientation. I keep hearing how fun it was and how I should definitely do Carpe Noctem. Can't wait.

carpe noctem is as fun as the group you do it with. choose wisely.

haha...did you end up in a bad group jason?

i actually united with 2 other members about how much it sucked. everyones sprinting, when all we (the other 2 and i) wanted to do was see how the campus looked at night. gosh talk about some people being uber competitive...hahaha

lol... we had the only guy in our group be the sprinter... he ran around all over the place til he found the right location, then gradually we stragglers would catch up.
not exactly the point of the "team" but hey, it works...
we so shoulda won.

a mass of sweaty people outside vista...that was a sight

liyana179, so you guys used the tactic of slave labor? hahahahha poor guy. exploiting the male sex and using their pride to your advantage..good one. :)

exploiting? i wouldn't call it that if they're just an all-around energetic go-getter who's happy to do it...
besides, i gave him my flashlight and i brought extra maps. and i found one of the clues too. so, i did my part... not COMPLETE exploitation hehe.

hahahahaha :)
