So my orientation part 1 is tomorrow and I know that we make our schedules at the end. However, on my Advising Planning Form, I selected a major I’m really not sure that I necessarily want to pursue anymore. To be honest, I don’t really know what I want to do at all. Either way, how does the course selection work exactly? I know this isn’t a final declaration of my major or anything but when I’m making my schedule will I have the freedom to select classes that aren’t in the major I chose?
Also, I took the math placement exam a few weeks ago and scored an 8. While I’m obviously familiar with much of the material covered, is it bad to take a math course below where I’ve placed? I’m afraid that come the beginning of the semester, I’m going to be totally lost in the Calculus being that I wouldn’t have been exactly practicing over the summer.
For me, my advisor gave me a sheet where she had listed the courses she suggest I take based on the major I declared on the Advising Planning Form. But you have the freedom to take any courses you want. However, you should come up with some ideas of what you might want to explore ahead of time. Of course many of the classes you are selecting will be like Chemistry and Calculus where you need them to do almost anything. And some classes you have to take, like your freshman seminar.
You can take a math class below where you placed. But I think unless you actually 100% don’t even know how to take the derivative of x anymore, starting with Calc I will be way too easy. Since you’re familiar with the material being covered, once you start Calc II or whatever you are taking you will probably start remembering the material and you’ll do fine at it. I studied to test out of Calc I after over a year of not doing calculus, and after a few days I realized that it was all coming back to me. Basically I would advise you to save your time and not go back too much, because you still have to do all the homework, sit in the classes, etc. when you could be doing something else.
