Orientation Session 1

My appointment time was at 12:40 pm and I only got two of the five classes I wanted to sign up for. Econ was full by then, and so was Intro to stat. I also heard that all Spanish classes were full by around 10 am.

The question then is how easy is it to get the classes you want once ISIS opens up? For example, a class like Econ 201? Or simply Spanish?

Not easy at all. But the best way is to email the professor right now, get on the waiting list (if any) and bring a course-action form on the first day of class - where you'll also inform the prof that you have emailed him/her. You can pick up course-action forms in Garrett Hall.

Course registration rarely goes the way you plan it to, whether you are at a big, state school or a small, private college. Even at the small, highly selective school where I first worked, students weren't getting their top course picks.

Deep breaths everyone...it will work out. Have your list of back up courses ready and don't get too fixated on the first group of courses you pick. Be flexible and open to learning beyond the subjects you already know. Good luck!

god, half of the people you met want to go to comm school?

i bet 50%+ of them are huge tools.

Just got back from orientation, and though I had a great time and thought the University is gorgeous, I didn't get any of the courses I wanted. I'm toying with pre-med, but am not committed. I wanted to take Intro Biol. but couldn't get the lab, so I didn't sign up for the lecture. I was going to take some form of calculus, but the instructors appeared to be mostly TA's with very foreign names, who I suspect (but don't know), have difficulty with the English language.
EVeryone kept saying that we wouldn't get what we wanted, but what's the point of signing up for the wrong stuff for a given major? I was hoping that ISIS would be my friend, but that doesn't seem like an out either.
So, best advice: start e-mailing professors? It seems like they'd get a ton of e-mail and would just reject them all, or not necessarily so??
My AP test scores still aren't on ISIS. How will I eventually be able to take advantage of some of the 4's and 5's I got? Even last year's weren't on ISIS.
How is Gerrans as an Intro Chem teacher? I hear Harman is good. Is Gerrans good enough to stay with? Some info I have found on various links seems to imply that yes, he is OK.
Brown College at Monroe Hill is beautiful!!! I'm so very happy that I got assigned there!! I even saw the private eating area in Newcomb....very nice indeed!! It will be fun to meet everyone there in August.
I was sorry that I didn't get the classes I wanted, but I do trust all out there that keep saying "it will work out"--even Dean J said so, and she's high on my list of reputable people. Yes, sorry about the classes, but not about UVA. CVL is magical.

jimmyjam, sorry to hear about classes! If this makes you feel better, my AP scores are not on ISIS either. But IB ones are there. Go figure?! What time was your appt btw? I hope once ISIS opens up, you'll have better luck. Keep us posted if you decide to email professors and how that works out for you. Good luck! :)

My appointment was at 11:20 am today. Thanks for your kind words. Something will work out.

Untitled, why do you say that?

haha, jimmyjam I was totally at that orientation. I think I am about to post a thread about my experience.

jimmyjam - gerrans should be fine (the 9am timeslot is no fun though), as long as you don't have metcalf you're good to go. also a large number of professors in the math department are foreign so get used to it.

if your scores aren't on isis it might be because the university never received them from the college board (this may be due to a number of reasons). bring your scores when school starts and get credit for them ASAP (go to the registrar of whatever department you are in). Do this early because if you forget then when 2nd semester registration begins you will have 0 incoming credits meaning you select courses dead last.

Gerrans is the King of Chemistry. Stay with him, period. You should have entered into the Intro to Bio lecture now and find a lab that suits your schedule later. I did the same thing with Chemistry.

Gerrans is the best choice for Chem 141/151.

Metcalf is teaching the all the labs. I guess he does a lecture and a TA does the actual small group meetings? I double checked and there is no way to get away from Metcalf. Panic.
Thanks for the input on Gerrans. I feel better.

UVAMalex,
I realized that too, after I left. It was such a zoo, and the person helping me didn't seem to know what to offer in terms of help or advice.
I did get the seminar "Be the spider, not the fly"--I liked the title and have read some good things about it.

Metcalf does nothing with the labs. All instruction comes from the TA's while he acts as administrator.

Out of desperation to sign up for anything, I signed up for Environmental Science with Blum, however, I got a 5 on the Env. Science AP exam. I hate to give up the credit I got in my AP class, also it seems that if I take Env. Science at UVA I will lose the AP credits that will help me towards signing up for spring. Is my thought process correct on this???
I don't consider my self a math person, though I did get a 5 in AP Calculus AB. I was too scared to sign up for Calculus II. I wanted Heller's class Calculus I but it was full. I've researched, what I can, about 121 and 122 teachers and the good ones were full. I think I might just wait until spring to take Applied Calculus 122 with someone who might be a good teacher. Again, is my thought process correct?? Or when ISIS comes up, should I just go ahead with someone who is not that good in Applied C. 122 this fall.
I only have 13 credits signed up for right now.
This kind of blows. I'm listening to everyone and believing them when they say, something will work out.
Thanks for answering my questions. You all are great!!

I've heard some horrible things about the Environmental Science class taught by Blum......

Thanks Ummmm............I don't want to take this course anyway. It makes no sense since I got 5 on my AP Env. Sci.
I thought maybe it would be ok, but I'm dropping it as fast as I can.

Another dumb ? from me. If and when I do contact faculty members at UVA, do they really go by the Jefferson bylaws/etiquette?? I mean do I call them "Mr." or "Miss" etc...instead of the traditional "Dr." that I'm more used to. I'd hate to get on someone's wrong side right from the git-go by making a huge gaffe.
