As a transfer student accepted into SMG the only orientation I can participate in is the last one which begins Aug 26-29th. My question is because it’s right before the normal move in day do we move into our assigned rooms on the 26th? That would seem to make the most sense to me, just wondering.

Yes, you do get to move into your dorm room early, before the rush. :)

Yes…the one advantage to orientation session 8 is that you move directly into your room. The disadvantage is that students attending orientation are ALL over campus instead of together in one place. For DS it wasn’t a problem. He was a music major and many of the music majors (including his roommate) attended summer music festivals and also attended orientation #8…so at least he had a roommate for orientation.

What about registering for classes? It seems like if that takes place during the last orientation there would be slim pickens in terms of classes.

There’s other threads on this. You’ll get all the classes you need, but there will just be less option for times you want. aka there will probably be a lot more 8 am classes left as opposed to noon and later. There will also be less option for writing class topics. You might only get to pick from 10 as opposed to 50

Well…here’s what my kid did. He knew he was attending orientation session 8…but he wanted to register for his classes earlier than that. We live close enough that it’s only a couple hour drive. He went up in late June and met with an advisor, and registered for his classes. Then he went to his summer program all summer and showed up for orientation session 8 for the REST of the orientation program. He had already done the computer access portion, and the student ID, and the class registration. So…if you live close enough…and you can arrange it…see if you can go in June to register for classes and meet with an advisor.
