^thanks. I did not know he could pay for it along with tuition. He’s going to orientation next week, so I’ll tell him to look for that option when he registers.

NXT, good job on non drinking alcohol. That’s certainly the healthy way to go. It seems to me that there is more alcohol consumption in Austin than there ought to be. The ratio of alcohol sales to total Austin population seems off from other cities. That’s my perception anyway. And it may be a direct result of the giant University right in the middle of the city. It probably affects the attitudes of the entire population in some way or another.

As for windows, you will have them, however you cannot open them. Some are sealed with paint, some with something more sturdy and some are not sealed at all. However, there is a decent-sized fine for opening a window. I don’t know anyone who has ever received such a fine, but it is definitely a rule that is on the books.

Considering that transfer orientation is only a day, that doesn’t leave much time for meeting any new friends. Freshman orientation is certainly a good place for that since it’s several days long.

People often like living in small houses together if they’re people that get along well. Such houses tend to be quite dirty because they take time to clean and most students have little motivation to do so. They have more important things to do. Some places are cheaper than living on campus and some are not. There is an area of Austin that us students refer to as “Riverside” even though that has a different meaning to non-students since it is actually a very long street. This is where you can get highly discounted housing that is much cheaper than living on campus. It’s a couple miles away from campus and you would have to drive or bus to campus each day (I would suggest the bus. There are regular UT shuttles going from this area to campus). “West Campus” refers to a large block of residential area directly west of campus that is mostly apartments, frat/sorority houses and large Co-Op houses, but also includes some smaller houses. This is a very convenient place to live and as a result can be rather pricey. You can occasionally find good deals, though. I did, but people hate me for it. I pay Riverside prices for Luxury housing directly next to campus. However, that was just due to a fluke in the housing market that occurred last year due to some new construction in the area that depressed prices for about a month.

I’m pretty sure Lone Ranger answered the rest of your questions, however he is wrong about the single study lounge in his dormitory. In addition to the living room he mentioned, there was also the Joynes Reading Room on the Ground floor, which was a silent study room that was required to be quiet 24 hours a day (annoying if you ask me). There was also a computer lounge for computer-based study and a little hallway on the south side of the building with tables, chairs, and a sofa that connected it to Andrews where the same 4 or 5 people studied on a daily basis. In addition, all of the Andrews and Blanton study areas were open to Carothers residents since, let’s face it, it’s really all one building.

haha random question: where do we go during the school year to get haircuts?

Oh, and sorry to all for taking so long to reply. These past few days, it seems I’ve actually had things to do.

And NXT, although I will certainly be on campus on the 6th, I can’t guarantee that I will be working. We’ll see.

This is almost an obscenely random question, but how are you supposed to get in a dorm if it’s locked at 11 PM?

Even more random question, are there any places nearby for eyebrow threading? I must emphasize the threading part.

And you can probably get your hair cut at Pro Cuts, which is really near to campus and takes Bevo Bucks.

I think the buildings allow entrance with an access code after 11 PM.

Umm, you can go wherever you want to get a haircut, Henry. I’m not really the right person to ask. I haven’t gotten one of those in a very long time. Lol. If you want somewhere in the campus area, there is a barber and a hair stylist on Guadalupe. Barber on 21st and Guad. General haircutting place on 24th and Guad. There’s one of those Sport Cuts-type chains on 30th and Guad. I don’t know anything about any of these places though. Last time I got a haircut was last fall by a friend of mine. I’ve been going with the long hair look since then.

haha yea I’ll probably be way too lazy to get a haircut. my parents will be horrified when I visit on the holidays.

Very simple, buriedalie, the dorms aren’t locked at 11 PM. Many of the doors lock at that time, but there will always be at least one “main entrance” that will be open. After midnight, you will have to swipe your card a second time at the main desk of your dorm so that the desk staff can verify that you are the person on your ID and that you really live there. This is a very simple procedure and you will get used to it. It takes a couple seconds.

I don’t know where the closest threading place is off the top of my head. You’ll have to Google Austin threading or something like that. You probably won’t have to go too far.

Yeah, my parents always are. LOL

Joynes isn’t REALLY part of Carothers…it’s its own thing for all honors kids, regardless of whether they live in the Quad or not.

And for haircuts, the best place for non-black men is the Wooten Barber Shop under the Goodal Wooten housing project. Talk to Cisco and he’ll take care of you. A haircut is $15 + tip.

In relation to a non-Honors kid being able to live in the Honors dorms with an Honors roommate, that’s not necessarily true, particularly this year. My friend and I tried it (we applied for housing in September) but just found out, days before the final preferences were due, that they’re not accommodating non-honors kids this year, apparently. Bummer. =/

Now don’t just take off on July 6th just cz I’ll have few more qeustions to ask you smoothie man ^^ & I recently also found out that I won’t be getting my contract anytime soon (since I applied in March) so for my second year, I will be looking at Dobie, Castiallian, and the Towers. I thought about apartments and also looked into them, & I know I wouldn’t be able to adjust myself in an apartment with a heavy course workload, as a result of transition from a community college to a University.

By the way, I get my haircut my Father (yea that’s true). He ain’t got no degree but it looks damn good (better than pro cuts & super cuts) maybe b/c he doesn’t use a machine and uses scissors and takes long. Also I heard places which use scissors cost more than places like pro cuts who use machines a lot. Anyhow, lol, feel free to contact me for a hair job …haha i sound like a dipsh**… but oh well its 12 am.

I guess I’ll be staying at Omni Hotels on Sunday and visiting off campus dorms and then orientation the next day. If you are not doing anything like always, maybe I can get a tour on Sunday too …we’ll see

i’m wondering about how students get their ut email addresses. i had thought that all students received them at orientation. but, i just came back from my orientation, and i didn’t hear anything about how to get ut email addresses. btw i’m talking about the email addresses that end in “@mail.utexas.edu”

you get them yourselves online.

[UMBS E-mail - New Users](http://www.utexas.edu/its/umbs/start.php)

click on “UMBS e-mail management page”

reminds me, on your UT email, how do you make your deleted mail disappear?

During orientation, when is the best time to get your id card, i.e., the least crowded time?
I am assuming that students aren’t allowed to register until after they get the card.

You can get your card right after a required event and beat everyone there, or you can go in the morning on the second or third day. The office opens at 8 and closes at 5(?).

Do I need my UT ID to take a placement test? What events do we need the ID for?
