Aside from the ED orientation in February for students and their parents, is there any pre orientation program? Do they just throw us into the pool Sept. 5 and hope we can swim?

First-Year Orientation begins a few days before the first day of classes for all students (you can also choose to attend a pre-orientation program as well) and will go through all the parts of being a Brown student. Besides the boring (but important!) lectures on alcohol safety and academic integrity, among other things, you’ll be meeting with your advisor to choose classes and doing things with your dorm unit. There’s also a lot of downtime so you can finish moving into your room and socialize with people.

Thanks, Bruno14. Cos I am coming from a really small high school and hope there will be ways to meet people in smaller groups…

There definitely will. You’ll be meeting other members of your dorm unit, and you’ll be broken up into different groups as well. Remember that most people arrive at Brown knowing very few other people, so everyone’s basically in the same situation.

There are pre-orientation programs too! [Pre-Orientation Programs and Special Activities for New Students](<a href=“Undergraduate Orientation I Brown University”>Undergraduate Orientation I Brown University)
I’m a 2016er too, so I can’t personally comment on how good they are, but I’ve been hearing really good things about the TWTP. If you wanted to meet people before/in smaller groups, it sounds like a good idea to do pre-orientation.

TWTP was a great experience! It’s the best of the programs for getting to know people and is extremely well run. A lot of my best friends are people I met there and it was great to have a group of friends before other people even got there. I definitely recommend doing a preorientation program, TWTP in particular :)

Plus, a lot of my friends are running it next year, so I’m sure it’s going to be amazing!

Make sure you go to as many activities as you can, even if you might think you’ll feel awkward. My daughter (graduated last May) forced herself to go to a lot of things and she is best friends to this day with some of the kids she met at Orientation.
