Sorry for the stupid question but what exactly is backpacking?

It’s when you go to class registration before your registration date and select the classes you want to potentially enroll in. Then when you want to register, you check all the ones you want to register for and click enroll. You can backpack as many as you want, even if there are time conflicts. It’s just a way to easily line up your classes so that when your date comes around, you already have your desired classes selected. Also, you can track the availability of the classes, as it will keep you up to date on whether the class is open or closed and how many seats are remaining.

Thanks entend, appreciate the explanation.

As MichiganStick says, there will be honors advisors and math advisors at orientation and you should be able to get the permissions there. If you can figure out the backpacking ahead of time, it doesn’t hurt to start before orientation because it will free up some time at orientation if you have an idea of what you want to take beforehand. Also by the time you register on the third day you could be a bit sleep deprived.

is there a curfew during orientation? x)

Haha, no. There’s no curfew.

D will go to orientation in June. We live in southeast. Due to financial reason, we won’t be able to go with her, so she will have to fly in to Detroit by herself. Can somebody give me some idea about going from DTW to campus? How easy/difficult to find the shuttle bus from DTW to Ann Arbor? Once she arrives on campus, is it easy to find the dorm she’s supposed to stay and check-in? Thanks!!!

GoPlay, there are several transportation options to/from Ann Arbor and DTW. Cabs are more expensive and personally, I wouldn’t send my daughter alone in a cab, especially in light of recent events. There were a couple of cab-related assaults in Ann Arbor this year. There are a few bus companies that run routes between DTW and Ann Arbor.

Here’s one option:
Ann Arbor Airport Shuttle: [Home - Ann Arbor Airport Shuttle](Home - Ann Arbor Airport Shuttle) The price is about $32 each way/ surcharges may apply

Here’s another option:
[Michigan Flyer > Home](http://www.michiganflyer.com/)

It is fairly easy to find the buses at DTW - just follow the signs to ground transportation outside. The only trick at DTW is that you have to cross over the main driveway outside the terminal - take an elevator up and over the road, and then come back down to ground level. This is true for the North Terminal. Depending on the airline, if she comes in through McNamara terminal, it’s a little different.

Make sure your daughter goes to Ann Arbor with a campus map. You can print one off the internet. Once you know the dorm she’ll be staying in, you can help her pre-map her walk from the bus stop to the dorm. I believe you check in for orientation at one of the student unions and then go to your dorm from there.

Hope this helps!

Second the recommendation about using the Michigan Flyer to get to Ann Arbor from the airport. My retired parents use it about 10 times a year going to/from the airport because it’s easier and cheaper than driving. They have never had a negative thing to say about using Michigan Flyer. Buses clean, drivers friendly, free water and buses equiped with wi-fi. Make sure you select the Central Campus Transit Center location in Ann Arbor - otherwise known as CC Little. I believe freshman orientation is in Markley this year so it’s definately a easy walk from CC Little even with luggage.

203, 215, and 270 all have waitlists open or open classes. If you want to get into 280, you can probably get in if you ask the professor on the first day of classes.

.

280 and 203 are the classes I need. More specifically, I want to be able to take 281 next semester. I guess I’ll just have to ask the professor like you said about 280.

As for 203, I already backpacked the open discussion section, but the only lecture that’s still open doesn’t fit my schedule (overlaps with another essential class). Would it matter if I went to my assigned section but showed up to a different lecture?

No, you can show up to any lecture you want.

Cool! Now I just need 280 to work out and I’m all set…

Thanks, JBsmom1 and Sportsmom42. I sure will check out both options.
