Does anyone know if there will be an orientation at the Academy that we can go to where we will find out what kind of boots we need and other such information... like a normal college orientation?

USNA provides everything you will need.
Sometime after May, after appointment acceptances have been returned to USNA, I-day packets will be sent out. They are filled with new forms to be completed and returned prior to reporting for I-day.

In the packet will be a (short) list of what to bring, and a booklet with a lot of information. Make sure you read, and reread the booklet. Most of what you need to know is in there. Don't bring anything else as it will only be taken away until after plebe summer, and you will have to lug it around for the several hours of in-processing before it is confiscated.

You will be issued everything you need during the in-processing, and it will be in a HUGE canvas bag you will lug to Bancroft. When we were there, the bag looked larger than some of the plebes themselves.

There is no "orientation".
CM

Do they still do box issues?

ok, say i was accepted to USNA, etc etc...

could my parents mail me my bass guitar after plebe summer? (so as to not get out of practice with playing it)

Zaphod- They issued us numerous boxes with everything we were going to need for the rest of the summer and well into your academy career.

vcm2007- That depends on your company. There are many of plebes here in my company that had their guitars mailed or brought up to them after the summer.

Best of luck to everyone in the upcoming months. My name is Nick, and if your ever in 18th company's area, make sure to ask for me.

Eh....

I'm not sure, but I think once you're at the Academy, the last thing you're going to be worrying about is playing your guitar. You'll have enough to keep you busy throughout plebe year.

Atleast in my dorm here at the UW, musical instruments are not allowed to be played in the rooms, so I highly doubt they will let you have it at the USNA.

dmeix,

i'm just rounding up people's opinions. the musical mood will come only when time permits, of course...

Plenty of mids and coasties and cadets bring and play their instruments in their rooms...you need a break from the studying etc. some times. My son has taken up the harmonica(easier to carry around!)...so have your's mailed to you.

hi Nick! It was great meeting you in the midstore over Columbus Day weekend. Your shipmates left LA this morning bound for Annapolis.
Hope you enjoyed your leave.
DMeix, Admiral Rempt, the Supe at USNA, is fondly called "The Singing Supe" because he encourages the midshipmen to sing loud and often. I think it's fantastic! SpiderMD is correct about musical instruments. Some mids also have keyboards. I'm thinking about getting one I saw in the Apple Store for my mid next year.

VCM 2007,

My husband and I brought our son his Fender acoustic/electric when we went to visit from Plebe Parent Weekend. When we went back for Herndon, we took him out shopping at a guitar store near Baltimore and he bought a Martin Backpacker for just under $300.00. That is now his school guitar and we brought the Fender home. The Martin is small enough to fit nicely into the locker and has a great tone (but it's not a bass...)

Just our story, but our son wouldn't be without a guitar.

Thank you for these posts. It will be a great relief to our son to know having his guitar with him might be an option at some point during the 4 yrs. - he was prepared to leave it behind.

What are the storage requirements for instruments? Can anyone provide the dimensions of the locker in which his gear will be stored?

What about a 'cello????

This makes me laugh!!! Or as they say LOL!! :)

hey, thanks for all the stories and experience.

i'll probably have to think of something tho....because basses are pretty big...

and as bz2010 asked: what ARE the storage requirements for instruments?

The reality is that plebes only have a few hours of liberty on Saturday each week. Sometimes they may miss liberty altogether when they are on duty, which I believe is every third week for plebes. Moreover, on campus plebes don't rate media, e.g., television, radio, movies. Therefore, if they are confined to the Yard for weeks at a time, musical instruments are a great diversion.

usna09mom - I tho't your post was leading up to saying that there was no way they were going to be able to use their instruments! Much better ending - thanks!

In fact, our son really honed his skills during Plebe year. It seems many people have their instruments and they have impromptu sessions where they provide the music for those who care to listen. They also help each other learn new styles, and on the weekends they frequent the two guitar shops that are in walking distance of the yard. There are also those who want to learn to play, and those who are willing to teach, and it really is a good time for stressed plebes, from what I hear.

That's good news - giving up the guitar would've been a big sacrifice for our son, but one he was willing to make. Great to know he won't have to do that. Just one more sign that he is on the right path!

my bass is my baby. i cried when i placed it on the bed too hard.

i'd be more than happy to provide bass lines for an impromptu jam session...

i kinda have to get accepted first, tho...

and i have a gut feeling that i should ask what are the musical regulations at NAPS as well....

what are they?
