Hey
So I’ve committeed to Northeastern (woo).
Next step: Orientation.
Main Concern: Timeframe
Why?: I live on the other side of the country, and it would mean an expensive plane ride and time off of work to fly up there in the middle of the summer.
Question: When does Orientation happen, and is it possible for me to have orientation right before my move in date so I don’t have to make two trips?
Thanks!
N
Do orientation together with the internationals, call them and ask for it.
International orientation is just before the semester starts.
There are usually 3 orientation sessions per college over the summer (usually one in July, August, and September). But as rgosula said, their is an orientation for international students that overlaps with welcome week. In the past, students from far away in the US have been able to do this orientation if they ask.
@nanotechnology @rgosula I was planning to come in with the International students since my hometown is far away and move-in will be simpler. But I was wondering if this puts me at a disadvantage for taking the classes I want? Is there a way to sign up earlier or will those courses fill up before I get to NEU? Thanks!
email my daughter got last year:
From: Orientation Orientation@neu.edu
Date: April 29, 2014
Subject: Orientation
Good morning,
The Director of Orientation has approved your registration for the final session in August - you’ll see this reflected in your portal. Your move-in date will be August 26, with Orientation on August 27-28.
In mid June, you will receive an email to begin pre-online advising. Also know, students are automatically registered or “seeded” into some classes, determined by your major department, before you arrive on campus for Orientation. Depending on your program of study, you may have to choose one or more electives to complete your fall schedule. Regardless of the Orientation session you attend, your advisers will help you choose from the list of available courses and register for an appropriate schedule.
Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. Thank you.
Best,
New Student Orientation
Also it turned out that she got pre-registered June-11, after following the directions in the email she got in June. She got all the classes she wanted.
@rgosula Thanks a lot for the information! My hometown is also quite far away, and I was worried about being shut out from classes I wanted to take. Looks like it won’t be a problem to have orientation in August
By the way, I am very pleased with Northeastern’s organization and how they keep you informed.
Pre-wedding for classes means you’ll be guaranteed to get into the classes you need to be on track for your major. They’ll also work with you to make sure you’re enrolled in the necessary next-generation class if you place out of something with AP credit. You might not get your top-choice elective, but you’ll have plenty more opportunities for that, and you probably won’t have more than 1 elective slot your first semester anyway.
Since getting into required classes isn’t a problem, what about deciding your schedule? Will I be stuck with 8 am classes if I go to a later orientation (I’m thinking of the second session)
Update: I recieved almost the exact same email that @rgosula 's daughter received (verbatim, just with the words changed). A bit worried about getting a good elective, but not a $300 plane ticket level worried - I’ll find something I enjoy that’s available.
Thanks for the help!
The pre-seeding for the required classes is random, so if you get an 8 am, it’ll be because that’s what was randomly assigned to you, not because of your orientation slot.
