I haven't posted on here in a while but here goes:

I would like to congratulate all of those who got into UNC. If you are pretty sure you are going to UNC then I will see you over the summer. For UNC I am the orientation leader this coming summer. SO THAT MEANS i will see all of you guys for two days during the summer. I urge you to check out the orientation website at http://orientation.unc.edu

At the universities 2-day Orientation you will:
REGISTER FOR CLASSES
PICK UP YOUR LAPTOP
GET YOUR UNIVERSITY ID
MEET SOME OF THE PEOPLE YOU WILL BE HANGING OUT WITH YOUR FRESH. YEAR
HAVE A GOOD TIME

As a member of the orientation staff I am really excited about whats going to happen this summer. ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND...

if you have any questions about this process you can shoot me an email at dakota@unc.edu .......peace out

All students are required to purchase a computer either through the univeristy or a private maker.

Housing should not be worrying you...chances are you will get south campus...but your first year of college you will be meeting so many new people that you won't care how far away you are from main campus,

Partying: There is not a particular dorm or part of campus that parties more than any other. Most people including myself just ride the P2P to franklin street to go out to the clubs, frats, concerts, etc....

Do you think my 15 inch powerbook will pass? It has an IBM chip and runs OSX, but I am fairly sure it will connect to the campus wireless connection, it has bluetooth.

If you've already got a laptop that meets the CCI specs which you can find on the CCI webpage, by all means keep it! It's one less expense to deal with. If you're buying something new, we saw mostly Dells when we were on campus last year for visits and CTOPS which influenced our own decision. It's proven to be a real workhorse.

I think in general though, you'll see a wide variety of laptop makes and models on campus. And unless you're on scholarship and get one of the CCI Lenovo/IBM's as part of the deal, you can get a faster better and cheaper one by shopping on your own instead of being locked into the Lenovo program models. From what I understand they're way overpriced for what they are and have a load of maintenance/repair issues too.

as a unc student currently owning a CCI laptop i would say that anyone that doesn't have one is a little crazy. Of course you may find cheaper and probably better laptops online or from some other venue BUT.....UNC's insurance program is too good to pass up. I mean if you ever have any trouble with your laptop you can take it to resnet and get a replacement one while yours is getting fixed.....CCI also comes with resnet...so if you don't know how to do something on your computer.....or if for some reason your computer messes up then you can take it to your resnet person (2-3 resnet stay in each dorm room) and get it fixed anytime of the day or night....

I'm glad you've had a good personal experience with your own CCI laptop, but last year we personally quizzed a lot of people (strangers basically) long and hard about their experiences before we laid out our hard earned cash and not one person we talked with who bought a Lenovo/IBM thru the CCI program (maybe 15-20 people we came in contact with then and another handful we know personally from this year's freshman class) had anything but very negative comments about them. People grumbled about price, they grumbled about the things breaking all the time and not being able to get tech support help when they needed it. That was enough for us!

I'm surprised to hear such negatives. I bought the CCI computer last year and have had nothing but a couple very minor issues -- not even problems, more just questions on how to do something. And those minor issues were handled by the in-dorm resnet person (right down the hall from my dorm room). They even have scheduled times to bring your computer in to have all the junk cleared off that you might have picked up over time.

I got the impression from reading theses posts that most people get other computers. Almost all of my friends bought the CCI computer. At least from my observation, more people buy the CCI computer than don't, if you have to buy a new computer.

I guess it's personal experiences that count here. Our thing was getting the best bang for my buck so that meant shopping around after hearing so many stories of buyers remorse. I still think the CCI Lenovo/IBM's are hugely overpriced for what they are, but I totally understand the allure.

I'm going the CCI way. You can't beat the complete insurance (and less headaches). In comparing your purchases, you have to compare apples to apples. Most people do not buy insurance, which is highly recommended. So you have to add that cost in to best compare.
My brother had his PC stolen from his school and the insurance would have paid for it. My M went out right after that and found a pretty decent coverage program. check it out.
http://www.nssinc.com/

by the laptop from carolina, the discount is huge! lenovo laptops are business quality, they're made with a lot of use in mind. the t60 is selling for $2500 with insurance and programs, if you bought it from lenovo it would cost you $3416 for the same thing. Check out the req's for a laptop for frosh, it's mindblowing.

Sophomore son has the IBM and still loves it after two years. The other available items like docking station, keyboard and flat screen monitor were well priced and he thinks that all in one printer is great. When comparison shopping the printer, it was only slightly less expensive through CCI but for OOS parents doing it all there is one less thing to have to ship/carry and the insurance and service are well worth the price to eliminate the hassle factor.

Two questions (for now) about CTOP.
What's the schedule for parents?
Will one empty suitcase get the computer equipment (laptop, monitor, keyboard, stack - no printer) home?

The schedule is on the UNC website. You don't have to pick up all of the pc gear, just the laptop (and back pack if you order one). You can pick up the accessories once school starts and you are in your room. It is much easier, just make sure that you have your invoice when you go to pick up the balance of your gear.

i got a CCI becuase it was free. I've had some virus problems but nothing that I could't fix. Just when you get it dont' be paranoid, get to know your laptop and learn to update things and pay attention to things you download, i know plenty of students who laptops are slow because whenever they dowload something they don't pay attention to whats downloading along with it.

But overall my experience has been good, but I plan on buying a new laptop when I graduate.
