when do we sign up for freshmen orientation? is there a link where we can do this online?

I don't think you actually "sign up" for NSO, since it's required for all incoming students - check out the Housing at Penn (from an insider) thread

*NSO Coordinator * that is the username of a person who comes to this thread who is an official coordinator I do believe. Are you considering any of the early programs for new Penn students?

NSO is a mixture of required and non-required events.

Actually, it's just a time to experience the plethora of frat parties that are truly the purpose of NSO.

NSO is really nice because you technically don't have to do anything (the reading project is probably the most strongly "required" in addition to meeting with your academic advisor). there are a ton of school-sponsored events and frat parties, etc. that can be fun though and give you a reason for getting out. and if you have questions about anything whatsoever, find PHINs (peers helping incoming new students) around campus and they'd be glad to help you out (hint hint).

im not thinking of doing any of the pre-NSo events. I just wanted to check whether or not we need to register for NSO and if there was a deadline.

To answer the original question-- no one has to sign up for NSO. We have a series of programs during the week leading up to the start of classes that introduce incoming students to the academic, culutral, and social aspects of Penn and Philadelphia.

Mandatory Freshmen move in is Thursday, August 31. To get a better idea of what to expect visit our website http://www.upenn.edu/nso/2005/welcome/index.html.

Additionally, around June 10 we'll be opening Pennster (Penn's Virtual Orientation Network) which allows the incoming class to connect with upperclassmen (PHINS, RA/GA, Peer Advisors, etc) and staff. To see what else Pennster allows the incoming class to do visit www.pennster.com

yo, my advice is to not even go to 95% of the events. the stuff during the day, where its like speeches about academic integrity and stuff, are HORRIBLY BORING. SKIP THOSE, PLEASE!

the only things id advise going to are events where the intent is to get you to meet other freshmen, like the library social, the Art Musem night (which was really sweet), etc.

And make sure you take advantage of the fraternity parties. It's your first big introduction to college, so make sure you're havin fun, and NOT being bored. There's plenty of time during the year (during class, specifically) when you can be bored.

I'd have to agree, unfortunately. Many of the "mandatory events" were all pretty much the same, and I'd leave them feeling like I could have spent that time getting to meet people!
