orientation

i'm a member of the barnard class of 2010, but i know all the first years in the university have orientation together, so i'm posting this in the columbia forum.

a week seems like a looong time for orientation...what exactly will we be doing? is it basically a lot of partying and hanging out in the city?

It changes from year to year, but there will be official parties (probably at least one big one off campus), lots of name-game sort of meet-and-greet festivals, ceremonies, and annoying seminars on safety and such. They'll give you a vast schedule with endless options for the rest of the time once you arrive.

don't take the orientation week for granted and try to take advantage of as much of what's offered as possible.....you'll never again have a whole week to just do nothing but enjoy urself.

...until Senior Week?

oh, ok, well I havent gotten to that yet....but thaks for giving me something to look forward to :)

EDIT: oh, wait, i thought columbia2002 was answering that....well i guess we'll both find out whether its better or not.

Um, winter break, spring break, a 3 month summer. And, you don't really have to work that hard outside of the weeks before finals and during the midterm periods.

This isn't 4 years of boot camp.

...unless you're an architecture major. Those poor kids pull more all-nighters than non.

BTW, Shraf, I heard most people thought Senior Week sucked/was a joke. I hope it's better for us, but I don't have much confidence in our class' "leaders".

well it def depends on ur major but i dont think that spending about 20 hours a week outside of classes and other committments doing problem sets is my idea of kicking back and relaxing.....and lets not even get into midterms and finals, thats practiclaly non-stop 24 hrs a day. for a week.

Perhaps it's best to stop now before these potential applicants find out that people actually live out of the library during those periods...

Although some may consider the 24/7 culture of Butler a weird attraction...

There are people who go through their whole lives with this type of attitude. If you're incapable of finding a balance in your life and that's something you want to have, you need to do something about it.

And, finals studying is definitely not 24/7 studying. Nobody studies 24/7. Working hard doesn't mean that you can't get a good night's sleep, take time to eat, get a little bit of exercise, etc.

Oh of course no one studies 24 hours a day. But for some reason, some people feel like they have to hang around Butler all that time during exams, whether studying, eating, sleeping, decorating their little cubicles, messing around in the stacks...

Half of Butler is a social experience. Some people went to Butler just to be seen and to socialize. How much work really gets done there? Not as much as it appears.

i agree with columbia2002 to some extent....the really hardcore ppl dont go to butler to study.

Yeah but does anyone actually think "I'm going to Butler to socialize?" Not usually. They go to Butler thinking they have a ***load of work to do, *then wind up socializing all night.

Of course, none of this changes the fact that people really do set up encampments there, with stuffed animals and photos on the walls and the like. Just go to the reading room on the eastern side of the third floor during finals.

And the people who are really unserious about working go to Uris, where they can talk to their hearts' content.

BTW, there are super hardcore people who actually do work in the Butler stacks. You find them at those tables far removed from the stack elevators. Whenever I encounter them they look at me like startled bats who have never crawled out of the darkness before.

wow, a little off topic now are we? haha thats alright thanks for the responses.
