Orientation

Could anyone who went on the first orientation give a quick summary and some tips to people going on later orientations? Thanks!

don't know if you have facebook, but they are talking about it in the BC class of '11 forum now.
the only suggestions so far are:
get plenty of sleep before
have back up classes because they didn't get many of their top choices
be prepared to listen to a lot of people talk

before you sign up for classes check this out:
http://www.ugbc.org/pep/search.asp

This is where students rate and review most of the professors at BC. The reviews are usually a good indicator on the professor, although, some people can be biased if they recieved a bad grade.

Day One:
- Awkwardness (If you're alone w/o parents at dinner and if you're not religious and you go to Mass - but that was just me personally)
- Speakers (Guy from UChicago in Theology Department = AMAZING)
- You get split into groups (7-8 people, with cool OLs - 17 with Vic was great)
- Ice Breakers
- Ice Cream trip (depending on your OL)

Day Two: (in no particular order)
- Breakfast
- Presidents of Schools (A&S, CSOM, LSOE, etc) speak (SNOOZEFEST) - Honors Kids split off to their own thing
- Diversity Video & Follow-up Discussion in groups
- Alcohol Lecture (w/ Father jack who is AMAZING) & Follow-up group discussion
- Cookout
- Small Group (not your OLs group) Academic Advising
- Skits
- Dodgeball Tournament
- Dance 360

Day Three:
- Breakfast
- Spirituality Overview (Mission Trips, Service trips, Plugs by Campus Ministry)
- Class Registration
- Lunch
- 48 Hours Plug
- Technology @ BC Overview
- Student Services Overview (Library, Tutoring, etc)

Tips:
- Get the newspaper with all of the classes listed in it and make your schedule before you get there; you'll go through registration much more quickly
- Have backups for classes you don't get (Perspectives was a heartbreaker, and I was part of the second rotation to sign up for classes)
- Check your teachers on the UGBC website PEPs feature; it'll help majorly
- If you have second thoughts about registration, you can always change it at home
- Bring blankets and pillows if you can't handle a crappy mattress or cold - I can handle most uncomfortable places, but that mattress was terrible
- Don't worry if you don't have any of the forms done: my advisor wasn't even given my group's advising forms, you can take your ID picture on campus day two after the presidents' speak, the medical insurance form isn't due until September 19th or something, and basically... don't worry
- Don't expect to have any free time; you'll be either too exhausted or at an event
- If you don't like stairs, yeah good luck. There was a point where we went up those death stairs about 3 times in one day

That's all I can think of for now.

what time do the days start and end? Do you think I would have enough time to go explore Boston on my own?

Orientation starts at 3 at Mass after 12 - 2 registration and ends around 4 on that Tuesday. Technically, you could spend the rest of the evening (with all your stuff) in Boston, but if you mean during Orientation, no way. They strictly prohibit you from leaving campus.

Wow you can't leave campus? Thats pretty harsh.

You won't want to leave campus. That, according to my daughter.

We just returned from orientation...she had a blast, met tons of kids who are all planning on moving in the Friday before the game and then going to the football game together on Saturday.

The point of orientation is to meet as many other freshmen as possible and between the small group breakouts and large group events, every minute was filled.

Have fun.

Parents, you won't see your son/daughter after 5:30 PM the first day until the closing ceremony. Parent orientation is very good, very detailed. You really finish with a sense of the community service identity of BC that makes it so unique for a national university.

Although I missed two days of work, as a parent it was very worthwhile attending. I am now totally comfortable with the choice my daughter made as to which college to attend.

To those who were not accepted to BC for transfer do not fret. It's certainly not the institution that many make it out to be. I just to spent my freshmen year at BC and didnt like it all. The academics are not challenging (hence my near perfect GPA), the people are fake, and the housing is terrible. I'll be at Georgetown next year and im so happy I got away from BC. If you want to be in Boston apply to Harvard, Tufts, or Wellesley. My friend who is at Harvard loves it and I know others who are happy at the others. So to those who didnt get in dont get too upset.

BC is a good school but people fail to realize that there are so many great opportunities at other schools. So im sorry if i offended anyone but I want people to "hear the other side of the story" concerning BC.

Seriously tdolson88, if you hate BC, then provide concrete evidence that back up your story rather than making blanket statement that does no service to everyone. I love BC, but I acknowledge its drawbacks and know where it needs to improve. No school is perfect, but your attitude to attacking BC on every single post here shows me that you were either rejected and now is trying to get back at BC with some concorted story and then post it every chance you get, or a person who really has nothing better to do with his/her time. My advice, get a life and move on.

tdolson88, why don't you let people get their own perspectives about BC FIRST HAND instead shoving your opinion down other people's throats. Make one thread about your ideas, don't flood every post you can find just because you feel you got short changed.

actually you can leave campus, but you're only really allowed to walk about 2/3 blocks off campus, it really isn't that bad though because there isn't anything too exciting around the campus and besides, at orientation, you're going to be up until about 10 doing the activities planned out for you, so its not like you can leave campus anyway

tdolson88 - if you hate BC I'm glad you won't be there next year. But seriously, did you even read the post topic?? You are off topic and it is stupid to post your negative BC review here. Have fun a Georgetown! but something tells me you'll be posting a negative GT review on their orientation forum next year...
