I will be attending a new college as a post-bac in Spring 2010, for only one semester. The college requires that I attend an orientation before school begins, which costs $100 extra.
The school is already expensive as it is, since I do not receive ANY financial aid, because I have already received my bachelors degree... and so every penny counts for me. Yes, I have to pay the tuition in FULL without aid... and I have to pay back my loans for my four years of undergrad.
How do I get out of going to Orientation? I really do not need or want to go since I will be at the school for only one semester. They said that orientation is mandatory and that I MUST go. I would need to sign up for it and reserve a seat fast because seats fill up quickly and there is a possibility that will not get a seat. Should I just not sign up?
Thanks
ANY feedback is greatly appreciated. I mean no disrespect to anyone who thinks orientation is required... I have been through it and just don't have the money.

This sounds odd to me. I’ve never heard of having to pay for orientation (but granted, I am not familiar with post-grad procedures). Also, how can they tell you on the one hand that attendance is required, and yet threaten to close you out?

It’s not for post-grads, it is for ALL undergrads. Yes, you pay for orientation… I paid when I started undergrad four years ago.
I am a post-bac student taking undergrad classes at a new school.

Oh, gotcha. Just because I’ve never heard of it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. :)

If it’s mandatory, and you don’t sign up, what happens?

This is from the website.

"
All New Students, whether freshman or transfer student, are required to attend State College Orientation, Wednesday, January 20, 2010 before starting classes on January 25, 2010.

You will receive presentations by the Office of the Dean of Students and other staff who will be of great help to you here at State College.

Seating is limited, so please reserve your seat by sending the form and making your payment early. While online reservations are accepted, your reservation is not confirmed until your payment is received. Payment instructions follow.

The cost for Orientation is $100.00. Please send your payment as soon as you submit this form to reserve your place or you may pay IN PERSON at the Dean of Student’s Office. (No credit card/debit card or over the phone/web payments are accepted. Cash, money order or check). If you fail to pay, your reservation is subject to cancellation.

Something about that strikes me as odd. You are required to attend, but “seating is limited”?

what do you want me to do?

lookbeyond, I noticed that same thing. Plus, it sounds like the information to be imparted at the orientation is “helpful” but I don’t see anything that the OP couldn’t live without.

OP, somehow you need to find out how “required” it really is. You might want to call the registrar and ask what will happen if you can’t attend (don’t tell them the reason, maybe imply that there’s a scheduling problem). Will they prevent you from enrolling? Close you out of classes you want? Expel you? Tell your professors dock your grades? Send you a bill for the $100? All of these things seem a little unlikely to me. See if you can find out what the penalty, if any, really is.

im guessing there is a makeup orientation if i cant attend

I know $100 is a lot, but its not worth all this worry. Just go. It’s a one-time fee.

But find out for sure. And if you have to go, I’m afraid PBush is right, you just have to go.
