I know this seems like it is a long way in the future, but I have to ask. I like to be prepared and I am a compulsive planner. So I am just wondering if anyone current students know what the summer orientation cost is approximately and how much more it is to arrive a day early. I haven't been accepted yet (RD, instead of ED unfortunately), but my family does not have a lot of money and I am still hoping I can get one of my parents to go with me when I leave, so I just want to know about how much I will need. Thanks. ^_^

Orientation costs around $300+. If I remember correctly it’s $45 extra dollars for early arrival. However, you cannot bring your parents along with you to orientation. They can drop you off but for the weekend until the end of orientation, that’s it. I hope this helps!

Your parents can go with you and go to a separate parents orientation, but you will be rooming in a dorm and they will probably have to find a hotel, and you won’t see them during orientation.

Wait! WHAT? WHEN is orientation? I thought it was right before class started; is it earlier? My D is planning on traveling this summer.

Thanks.

It really depends on which college within NYU (CAS, Stern, Tisch) she was accepted into. Some like CAS have their orientaitons in the summer. But Stern has theirs during welcome week (before classes start). You should be getting mail about this soon. Also if the orientation is in the summer, they are generally 3 days each and have multiple sessions to choose from. (Meaning you can choose from the list of weekends that the school provides for orientation)

Thanks so much. I will keep that in mind. With any luck I will have to cut back on spending (alot) so I can afford to go. Does anyone know what they do if you are unable to make it to orientation? Do they not allow you to go to college, make you pay extra, or anything?

It would be important to make it for orientation. You meet your advisors and you plan out your fall classes. A good team building experience.

Darn, bump for more info. Sorry to tag onto your question OP…maybe you’ll get even more helpful info if I ask this:

My D hasn’t been accepted yet (RD for CAS). But she’s planning summer travel now. I had no idea one had to have the time and money to travel to NYC in the summer before freshman year too! Does anyone know the approximate dates these are usually held (again…for CAS)? Because the dates she won’t be available (due to two different things) are June 14 ish to July 17 ish. I don’t know that she CAN make it to orientation. ??

This is posted on the their website. these are the dates for summer 2010 for CAS.

Lots of dates in June.

Milk and sugar (mmmm…snow “ice cream”, anyone else live in the snowbelt and know what that is?)

THANKS…I’m so lame - I looked for that online. Of course, she’s planning to be GONE for all but one and who KNOWS if she could get that one. Oh well…I won’t borrow trouble. Something will work out.

If you’re in LSP, does LSP have their own orientation… or do you go to the orientation for the school you’ll be in after LSP?

E.g. I’m in LSP, but I’ll be in CAS after I’m done with my requirements… so do I go to LSP or CAS?

LSP has their own orientation programs which occur during Welcome Week, I believe.

Good, cause I really dont want to go this summer and spend more money… Lol.

Stohare, you go to the LSP orientation, not CAS.

OP and Illy, there aren’t parent orientations at all of the schools. For example, no parent orientation at CAS nor LSP.

^That is not true. I went to a parent orientation for CAS, it is held on the first day of the student orientation.

^ Yes that was true in 2008. For 2009 and 2010, not the case.

Can my parents attend Orientation with me?

Unfortunately, they cannot. While we strongly encourage your parents to take an active interest in your college career, Orientation is a three-day session designed to introduce you to your new life as a CAS student. Once your Summer Orientation has concluded, we encourage you to return home and share your experience with your parents.

Of course nothing can stop your parent from flying to NY and getting a hotel and seeing you (if you want) after the functions. But…why? This is a GREAT step to testing your freedom. Finding your way around, traveling alone, getting to events on time, finding ways to meet people and make friends (in fact - that can’t really happen if every kid is in a group of 3, two being parents…people just don’t reach out/bond if they have the ready-made family group/bond standing with them…but, if you’re at an event and EVERY person is “alone”…you find ways to introduce yourself).

R124687,
The website is clear that you will not be attending your child’s orientation, but there is definitely a 2 hr orientation for parents in a seperate building given by the Dean of Freshman for CAS. You will not be seeing your kid at all. There is a nice breakfast, they go over health services, mental health services, Move In Day schedule, dorm deadlines for guaranteed housing, etc. Question and answer period. It is not mandatory and just available to those that will be dropping the student off for their 3 Day Orientation.
