Orientation

Do parents have to come to orientation?? My dad is considering coming but I am not sure if it is necessary for him to come.

i think so

No, it’s not required at all. Many people go by themselves (as I did).
However, there are a good number of parents who do attend.

^ @Phishy, really? wow great! i didnt know that! haha

is there any other way beside the orientation for out of state students? what would happen if you dont attend?

any idea???

yea they castrate you and make you run around naked in the school…lol jk

it nothing that bad.i think you just choose you classes at the beginning of the quarter rather than in the summer before…there might be placement problems from what i hear…so make it unless your in hospital bed…and you get to meet awesome peeps like me!!!

thank you …

Do you stay overnight at Davis? And about placement testing, where do you take the English one, Math, Chemistry, Biology, etc. .

@Indianjatt: Yes, orientation is a three-day program. For the placement tests, you will take them during orientation and they will tell you when and where to go to take them. I believe there are only 3 tests: math, chemistry, and foreign language. Which one you take depends on whether you’ve taken certain classes in high school and what type of classes you want to take your freshman year.

Here is a detailed page describing placement tests: [UC Davis Orientation - Freshmen Placement Tests](http://orientation.ucdavis.edu/freshmen/placementtests.asp)

I highly recommend prospective UC Davis students to attend orientation as it will help you with choosing your classes, what requirements you will need to graduate, and you will also get familiar with the campus and how it works.

Thank you so much for the link! However, I still have a few questions so I hope you can answer them. ;)

For math, I already received a 5 on Calculus AB and hopefully a 4/5 on Statistics. Will that exempt me from the math placement test or not, because it says you need to take it if you are taking Chemistry 2A?

Also, for the English placement test how do you figure out if a test is offered at your high school or where a local office to take the examination is? Is the placement test essay difficult or rather essy? It’s just unfortunate that I got a 660/680.

Your AP score will exempt you from the math placement test. Be sure to fill out the waiver form saying that the math test is waived though if you’re taking CHE 2A; otherwise, you’ll be dropped. (You don’t need to do this until you start the class.)

It says that "All freshmen should expect to take two placement exams prior to course registration during Orientation. "

But I’m exempt from the Writing test, and I’m not taking on taking foreign language, chemistry, or math at Davis. Does that mean no tests at all for me?

Yep, that’s correct. Lucky you!

What? I haven’t got any info on this? When is it? Or do you only get it if you have SIR’d?

I am going to decision day on the 16th. =)

Probably will choose Davis in the end, if my appeal for SD is not accepted.

btw, Indianjatt, congrats man. You made it in as well. I remember we waited so nervously for this process in past few months. ;)

ooooh. Stay till the 17th for Picnic Day!! I heard it’s the biggest event of the year and supposed to be super fun (though unfortunately, I will not be attending D:**).

^haha. I will see.

But for orientation. Did we have to SIR to get this info??

Never mind, I clicked on the link and got the info. =)

@Indianjatt: I’m assuming you are talking about the Analytical Writing Placement Examination. You will receive a letter informing whether you need to take the test or not and it will also have details on when and where to take it.

For the exam, you are given an excerpt to read and a prompt at the end of it asking you to respond to the text. If you had practice with these kind of essays in your high school English classes, then you should be fine.

AS a parent I really though that orientation was great. It gave me a slice of what my D would be experiencing in college. I recommend that if a parent (or both) can go they should. The parents and kids are separated from the begining–you only get to eat together! I figure I am paying for this education—impress me UCD with what I am buying!
We live in the Bay Area so we just drove back and forth for the two days—but you can spend the night if you want and stay in the single dorms or you can stay in a local hotel. We really learned a lot…

Is anyone going to the July 11 Orientation date? The date is for colleges of Letter & Sciences.
