Orientation?

Are the orientation sessions mandatory?...they're all in June and July, what if I can't go?

I second this question. Isn’t there any late orientation in late August?

This is from the FAQ section of the Freshman Orientation link:

What if I cannot attend a Summer Orientation session?

All students who intend to enroll in the College of Arts & Science for the fall semester are expected to attend one of the five Summer Orientation sessions. If you have specific questions or concerns, please email cas.orientation@nyu.edu.

Here is the link to the Freshman Orientation info on the admissions website:
[New York University | College of Arts and Science | Freshman Orientation](http://www.nyu.edu/cas/orientation/)

hypothetically speaking, what would happen if I didn’t go to any of the sessions?

alba,

It appears to me that the most important aspect would be the advisement sessions you will miss by not attending the June/ July orientations. You should contact NYU (office that handles the orientation sessions) and find out how you can set up alternate appointments with an advisor (even if via email or phone, if possible) to discuss your course selections for Fall 2010.

Other than advisement, you would be missing some welcoming speeches, meeting other Freshmen, faculty lectures, entertainment, trips around the city and staying at Founders Hall overnight.

My son received an orientation schedule. I will see if I can provide the link. OK, here is link with the general description of the purposes of the orientation. (I could not retrieve the link for the orientation schedule, but I summed up what I remember reading in the paragraph above.)

Olz, There are no orientation sessions in August, but there is an August Welcoming Week, which has different purpose from the Orientation sessions, especially regarding academic advisement, which is key for the June/ July sessions. Please note what I mentioned to alba. Make sure you set up alternate advisement appointments if you cannot attend orientation sessions.

CASMom, Sorry, did not realize you already posted the same link.

Based on their messaging, it seems like it’s not technically mandatory, but they basically expect you to come, so you had best unless you really can’t make it.
I personally think It’ll be fun to get acquainted with other Freshman before school starts.

evolving,CASmom
thanks!

Actually there IS orientation session in late august, held for inyernationals only:

"Dear CAS Student,

Congratulations! You are about to begin four exciting and challenging years at
the College of Arts and Science. We have designed an academic orientation
program to assist you in making a successful transition to college life. We
realize that for many international students it may be difficult to attend the
summer sessions, and so we have designed a special 2-day CAS International
Student Orientation program for students who are coming from abroad. This
session will be given Tuesday, August 31 through Wednesday, September 1, the
week before classes begin.
…"
just found this message in NYUHome email.

I’m so glad now I don’t have to spend lots of money to go there in July.

Olzhas, My apologies. Should have made it clear. I was just providing info we received about orientation for domestic students. I was not addressing the schedule for international students (did not realize you are an international student).

Anyway, I’m glad you are able to cut cost with the later orientation in August. Just wondering. Will your later orientation and presumably advisement in August close you out of certain classes that fill up early? By the time you have your orientation, all the June and July advisement would have resulted in registration for classes by that time for June and July session attendees.
