Are the attendance of parents mandatory for orientation?
They won’t be able to make it to any of the sessions so i was thinking about going with a friend. Do you guys think that would be ok ?

Pretty sure you can’t go with a friend and it’s okay for your parents not to come (Mines aren’t either)

Is your friend in BU?

And Significa is correct, parents are not expected.

I asked when my sister was applying and they said it was okay for me to go with her. You could just say that person is your “guardian” or sibling. It’s not like they check.

Would you recommend going to the Common Ground program or the First-Generation Student Welcome event during orientation?

I didn’t do most of the events. I was there to get my ID and schedule. If you’re interested in doing them, by all means go ahead, but I didn’t find anything beneficial. I just went to the mall with my dad.

I wonder what we’ll do there.

I hope its not some bogus pep rally or ego boost. I’m really sick of listening to those after college visits. Hoping for some nice info about classes and a one-on-one with an advisor, maybe some free food.

Its a 5 hour drive. I don’t want to waste my time :

You talk to an advisor right before you pick your classes. Basically you get assigned to a group based on the school you go to. I think it was 8-10 kids. They put an upperclassmen in charge of the group and he makes you do various dumb games. I think we played that game where you try to remember everyone’s name. They also have a “party” for you, which was equally lame. Oh, but the person in charge of your group is probably picked randomly since the only thing we had in common with him was the fact he was in our school. It was high school freshman orientation all over.

Fantastic.

Your parents most definitely do NOT have to be at orientation. Mine dropped me off and went on their way. I saw/heard from those who do bring parents that they do a good job whisking parents off to their own orientation though, so you don’t really see them either way. I think the best part is being on your own if you can pull it off though.

I actually loved orientation. It was cheesy sometimes and boring at other points, but you can meet a lot of people if you try. It made me feel sure that BU was the right place for me. I hung out with a really cool group and met many people while I was there. I won’t lie and say we were the best of friends freshman year (although I never expected that anyways), but I actually ended up meeting with many of them over time. I re-met a lot through classes & mutual friends, and having that familar face aspect let us bond more there. It’s what you make of it.

so i most definitely CANNOT bring a friend instead of my parents ?

Why don’t you just ask the school yourself?

Is this schedule the same for all orientation sessions? [Welcome to Boston University’s Orientation Website](Orientation)

I’m an international student so I’ll be attending the august 25 session…

question…since we’ll be choosing our classes & all while we’re there, do we need to bring anything with us [school-related, etc.]?

No, you don’t need to bring anything.

Why would you want to bring a friend o_O, unless they happen to be going to BU with you. You get to meet some people in your freshman class, and get to start making new friends. Also you don’t have to bring anything, you will talk to your SA (Student Adviser) who will gladly help you choose your courses, then you meet with an actual adviser (not the one you will later be assigned during the year, however you can change your adviser whenever during the school year).

Also at orientation, depending on the SA, they will either stick to the books or, go around and show you the school and the area (most SA’s will stick to the 2nd route instead of running by the book). And yeah you do play cheesy name games and what not, but hey it’s nice when your in a class and you can have a familiar in the class with you. And don’t worry there is plenty of free food, haha. I’m here all summer for classes, and they have some pretty awesome BBQ’s so I’m definitely going to be there to get some free food haha.

I’m about to register for the fourth session of orientation, but when exactly will it end? I’m taking the bus to and back from NYC and would like to book my return in advance as well. Would I be able to take the bus Friday afternoon?

I’m going to the final session ~24th August?
Pumped

It ends early Friday Emlett (Applies for every orientation) 10ish

I’m taking a bus from NYC, too :D

How’s the overnight stay? Where do we sleep and why is that required?
