Oscar Buzz

For those who care about the Oscar Awards-

How does a film get nominated for Best Picture? Do you find the nominations and wins easily predictable? Do the criteria simply consist of plot, acting, directing, cinematography, and screenplay? If so, do you believe last year’s winners truly represent the best of 2004?

More importantly, which films do you predict will be nominated for Best Picture in 2006? Who (which) will win?

According to this one source, http://www.theoscarigloo.com/Picture.html , the top contenders, tentatively, are:

Btw, out of these movies, I've seen only Brokeback Mountain and Capote. You don't have to have seen all the movies in order to post predictions. Wild guesses are acceptable, but I prefer that you have at least some basis for judgment (i.e, if you've seen one or two of the movies).

My predictions, as of 12/26/05:
Best Picture: Brokeback Mountain
Best Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote). Heath Ledger (Brokeback Mountain) is a close second.

We have 3 months to arrive at a consensus. Let's get to work, people!

My Oscar predictions, as of 1/9/06 (tentative):

Best Picture: Brokeback Mountain
Best Director: Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain)
Best Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote)
Best Actress: Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line)

eh most of these movies suck in my opinion. the only good ones were chronicles of narnia, king kong and cinderella man.
memories of a geisha was a huge bore.

Meh, I've lost any faith in the Oscars as any sort of barometer of a film's quality...I've found it's best to look at what individual critics and film associations nominate, rather than the Academy, which is biased heavily towards "Hollywood" productions.

Syriana; Capote; Munich; and Good Night, and Good Luck were the only truly excellent films this year.

the three movies i think deserve to win are walk the line, brokeback moutain and crash.

crash was out of control. did anyone else see it?

Crash is really overrated. People need to stop calling this movie great--which it would've been had it been an hour longer. But fitting all of those stories into 100 minutes turned every character into a one-dimensional stereotype.

The Oscar Igloo has adjusted its list of predicted Oscar nominees:

As of January 10, 2004 (tentative)

I hope that "Howl's Moving Castle" wins "Best Animated Film".

Come on people.......how about cinderella man?

I thought that was an amazing movie..........

My mother is rooting for Cinderella Man, even though she hasn't seen the film yet. hah. We'll see about that.

Btw, I just noticed that I typed 2004 in post #10. of course, I meant 2006!

BrokeBack Mountain won't win. If you take away the gayness, it's just a cliche romance. Yeah, maybe well made. But not 'best picture' material.

and, the oscars will get too controversial if it wins.

I've only seen King kong and that I dont think that is 'best picture' material..
All the movies up there are not the kind of the movies I watch.. I might watch Walk the line and maybe Brokeback mountain for Heath Ledger <3

IMO crash has been the best movie this year. too bad it won't win anything.

I don't know yet which movie I want to win. I have yet to watch most of the movies. But among critics' top picks, a clear pattern is emerging.
