OSS admission question

The deadline for the application is December 1, since UT is on the rolling admission, and the spots are limited, will it be advantageous to submit application asap? I know the in state students get the admission notification quite early. My friend’s daughter got accepted in September last year. or does UT wait until 12/1 then review all OSS applications?

UT does not have rolling admission. In state auto admits that file early are told they are accepted into the university before the December 1 deadline but the vast majority of them have to wait to until late February to find out if they got their requested major. A few auto admits find out if they got their requested major starting in late November and then in December and January.

For OOS that apply to the various honor programs, those deadlines are before December 1, and I thought I read on CC that some of those found out either a little before December 1 or just after.

I am not sure I understand @K20903 on whether UT has rolling admissions, though he or she could be perfectly correct. Each college seemed last year to work to their own schedule—McCombs and CS/Turing ware releasing decisions in tranches as early as late Nov, when Plan II was doing their first tranche. A number of engineering applicants heard in December as well, while most, as stated, had to wait until the 3rd week of Feb.

For OOS, UT wants the nation’s best and brightest, but politically can only accept a few due to the 7% law. There was anecdotal discussion that some of the most competitive UT colleges would wait until February to notify applicants because they wanted to evaluate and admit more OOS high stats kids that also pay 3x tuition. No data I’ve seen corroborates that.

For those OOS applying to Ivy league and top schools, get your apps in early and be prepared to wait. If your student does not get into Harvard or Princeton ED, then you still have to wait for Cockrell, Plan II, McCombs and CS/Turing.

Rolling admission is where a university makes decisions as the applications come in. UT does not do that. Yes they make decisions sooner for applicants whose AI/PAI they know will be guaranteed to get the major they requested. But an applicant who filed on August 1 may not hear a decision until late February. Filing early does not guarantee you an early decision.

I think I have an explanation for the confusion. Auto-admits are admitted to the university (not necessarily to their major) soon after they submit their applications. They, and everyone who isn’t an auto-admit, are not considered for their major until after the December 1st deadline. But since they’re admitted to the university it may seem like they do rolling when in fact they do not. Which was explained above, but hopefully the elaboration helps

Are you saying that since he is not auto admit, he will have to wait until mid Feb to find out admission to both university and the major?

It will depend on his stats and major but the majority of OOS students find out in February.

UT Austin limits OOS and international enrollment to ten percent of the class.
