OSS at NCSU

Is there anyone (preferably a currently enrolled OSS) who can offer any insight as to the experience an OSS might have at NCSU considering the student population is 91% IS? Specifically, are OSS well-received? Do they tend to feel 'out-of-the-loop'?

DD and I took a tour over the weekend, but there was not a lot of activity. Not sure if this was due to the unusually cold temperatures; or is it possible that many students go home on weekends? This made it difficult to get a feel for the student body.

Although DD does not know anyone who attends NCSU, I believe she would have no problem making friends. The few students that we did meet seemed very friendly. If accepted, it would be one of her top choices, but we would like some reassurance that the student body would be a good fit for her.

^^^^ Sorry, I meant OOS

I thought that the OOS population was probably a little higher, I know that the state legislature prescribes that they may accept no more than 18% OOS. We are from Boston area and my d was accepted last month. Ncsu is either her 1st or 2nd choice. She is starting to balk a little at going to a “southern school” --which will probably seem ridiculous to some NC people on this thread. Her dad and I will visit with her in march and hope at this point that she chooses NC state this spring.

When are accepted students days in march? We are expecting a packet in the mail this week but I think the dates are online – we just can’t locate them now…

From my son’s accepted student page
“Experience NC State” is an invitation-only event for admitted students. Check-in/Registration begins at 8:30 and there is an optional campus tour that starts at 8:45 am. The event starts at 10:00 am and will conclude at 3:30, followed by an opportunity to visit the college on campus that hosts your major. For more information see [:: NC State University Undergraduate Admissions ::](http://admissions.ncsu.edu/).

My OOS son will be attending NCSU in the fall. We took a tour, interestingly enough with an OOS tour guide. He said that being from OOS has never been a problem and that he loves the welcoming and friendly attitude of everyone he has met. My OOS son is super excited!

No need to worry about being from OOS at NCSU. While the majority of the students are from NC high schools, many of them moved to NC from a far flung state. We are native NC residents. S1 is an '09 NCSU grad. For three years he roomed with two friends from h.s.( whose families had moved to NC from northern states) and a guy from Chicago. The Chicago guy had absolutely no prob. with the NC crowd. Besides his roommates, S1’s very best friend was from Iowa. They were all great friends from freshman year til graduation and are still friends almost two years since grad.

NCSU students are pretty laid back. There’s something for everyone there.
Don’t be afraid to come to NCSU from oos.
Go Wolfpack!

Thank you for the input and reassurance. I was also wondering if a lot of students go home on weekends? I’m thinking that, even if half of the students were to go home, with an undergraduate population of 25,000, the remaining student body would be large enough to maintain a good energy on campus.

I’m thinking most students stick around to socialize on the weekends…Pack mom??? Anything to add there?

We live less than 3 hours from Raleigh. S1 rarely came home for a weekend other than holidays or breaks. He might as well have been in NYC for all we saw him!. All of his friends stayed for weekends too. There’s just way more fun to be had in Raleigh on the weekends than there is at Mom and Dad’s. Lots of hangouts on Hillsborough St. and always something to do on campus.

Of course there’s always the one kid who goes home every weekend (a friend’s D at State got that kind of roommate) but it’s not the norm.
Even if you get that kid for a roommate, there’s always plenty of other kids around…esp. in the fall during football season. Everybody goes to the football games.

SnLMom,
What I’m hearing from the other comments is all well and correct, but two items in your original post bear comment:
(1) you mentioned it was unusually cold that day. FACT: NC folks do not like the cold, do not want the cold, and wish cold away. Seriously, if it was one of the “really” cold days like what we have had this winter, then students stay inside. But just wait until Spring! The campus will bust out in color and you will not be able to drag a student away from the weekend campus outside activities.
(2) It is tough to judge the campus from just a few hours of strolling around, ESPECIALLY if those hours are ill-timed on the weekend. For example, if an NC State basketball or football game was playing that day during the hours you were walking around, I would bet my last dollar that you wouldn’t see a whole lot of life at all. Carter-Finley (football) and RBC Center (basketball) can hold ALOT of students. But wait, in a few hours the campus will come to life…especially if the Wolfpack win!
Last, don’t worry too much about kids going home on weekends. Sometimes that turns out to be a blessing if your roommate has a family vacation home at Topsail Beach (it happened to me), or a family that welcomes you like one of their own.

Selling ncsu to my d, flying in to Raleigh for admitted students day 2/28. Actually well be there all weekend beforehand. Can anyone suggest what she should try to see before the formal slate of activities?

Do you mean things to see on campus or in Raleigh?
Will you be taking the campus tour as part of the slate of activities?

Accepted students day on Monday 2/28. We are flying into Raleigh on thurs. 2/24 and staying in Raleigh til tuesday.

Maybe some athletic/arts events:

Thur at 7 - Jazz Ensemble (Stewart Theater)
Thur at 7 - Women’s Basketball vs. Boston College (Reynolds Coliseum)
Fri at 4 - Women’s Tennis vs ODU (J.W. Isenhour Tennis Facility)
Fri at 8 - Orchestra Showcase: Copland and Rachmaninoff (Meymandi Concert Hall - Raleigh)
Sat at 2 - Men’s Basketball vs. Georgia Tech
Sun at 2 - NCSU gymnastics vs. George Washington

Very cool, snlmom. Thanks for great suggestions! We are big basketball fans, so hope to check ou at least 1 of the games.

Unfortunately the Wolfpack men’s team is having a “down” year in basketball this year but the atmosphere would still be fun. The men’s team plays in the RBC Center which is off campus.
I think the women are doing much better than the men and Reynolds is the original historic on campus coliseum.

A h.s. classmate of S2’s plays in the Jazz Ensemble. I hear from her Mom that they’re pretty good. Stewart Theater was just renovated in '09.

Check out Carmichael gym if your D likes to workout (S1 practically lived there).

Be sure to go to the campus bookstore and buy a NCSU t-shirt and window decal. You could also ask any questions about laptop choices while there.

El Rodeo is a funky old Mexican restaurant across fr. campus on Hillsborough that is usually full of students. We’ve eaten there a few times…decent Mexican, not expensive.

Jasmin Bistro (Mediteranean) is also on Hillsborough across from campus. Got rave reviews from S1.
If you’re staying with family in Raleigh, have then drive you into downtown to see the Capital building and Fayettville St. area.

We will be visiting this spring. Are there any clothing shops that are within walking distance from campus?

I can’t think of any clothing shops within walking distance. There are malls in Raleigh but not that close to State. The WolflLine is NCSU’s bus system. I think it runs to shopping areas.

Yes, BY ALL MEANS, try to make a B’ball game. The women’s game is right on campus in the older, more intimate Reynolds Coliseum; while the RBC Center (a skip down the road) hosts the men’s.
– Also, Friday 7pm, at the RBC Center: NHL hockey Hurricanes vs. Penguins (but maybe you already get enough hockey up north)
– Catch a movie at the student cinema: [NC State Campus Cinema](http://www.ncsu.edu/cinema/)
– Monday at 3pm, if your campus schedule permits, you may want to catch the Stewart Theater presentation on the future renovation of the Talley Student Center. see more at: [NC State GoLinks - go.ncsu.edu/newtalley –> <a href=“Student Centers – NC State University – Campus Enterprises”>Student Centers – NC State University – Campus Enterprises](Talley Student Union Achieves LEED Gold in Operations and Maintenance – Campus Enterprises)

capemay –
for ladies, my artsy D liked a cute little clothing shop right on Hillsborough St (right across from campus as we walked to Jimmie John’s for lunch last Saturday). Can’t recall the shop’s name, but the sign outside said “everything under $15”…that got my D’s attention. She’s not a trendy kid, but prefers to invent her own look, so she liked the “indie” feel to the place.
