OSU Business School Question

So I have been admitted to the OSU business school intending on majoring in Finance. On my application status on the website, however, it says in the “Plan” section BS in Business Administration and in the “Interest” section it says Finance. Any fellow business majors not majoring in BA having this problem?

Should you choose to attend OSU’s Fisher College of Business- regardless of your major- you will graduate with a degree in Business Administration. Your major is your “specialization,” not your degree. I’m a third year finance major, and it was odd to me too, but I get it now. It isn’t a mistake, that’s just how it works here.

Fisher requirements for all majors include a class in nearly all the different specializations- so finance majors will also take HR, accounting, operations, marketing, international business, and a collection of different business administration classes. You actually only take about a year’s worth of classes in your major, and everything else is GECs and different business classes. It makes you a well-rounded student.

Wow that was very helpful thanks maybell. Considering OSU is one of my top choices, I’m wondering if a BS in business administration would help me as opposed to a BS in finance. What has your experience in your finance major been like so far? How are the internship opportunities? Do top recruiters seek osu finance students? Help is much appreciated

Not sure if this will help you, but my son will graduate in March from Fisher with a degree in Business Admin. but his specializations are Logistics and Operations Management. He took full advantage of Fisher’s Career Services office - intern and career fairs, mock interviews, etc. Also joined any clubs that were recommended and participated in their activities (including an elective trip to Germany to see companies like BMW, Nestle, etc). Last summer he had a fantastic internship - was paid well and got tons of experience. He had two official job offers and just made his decision last week. He’ll begin work in April.

All of his friends in Fisher (many with different specializations - finance, accounting, etc) have jobs lined up already. People can’t believe it when I tell them! Many top companies recruit at OSU - I have been amazed. If you take advantage of what Fisher can do for you, you should be in great shape.

Yes that is great news. I’m from long island so I’m reallly looking for a school that will give me some great opportunities. I am planning a visit to Columbus and possibly a meeting with a Fisher representative. I’m torn between Ohio state and u-maryland so this information is extremely helpful!

What a coincidence - my son’s first choice was UMD until he revisited his top 3 schools in April. When he went to OSU again he said it just felt right and has been very happy with his decision. We are from MA BTW but do have family in Ohio (Husband and I are both OSU Alumni). Definitely visit and definitely make an appt to see someone in Fisher. UMD didn’t have as much surrounding the campus (restaurants, movies, stores, etc) as OSU which my son didn’t like. Also, the area was not as “safe”. You could get to DC in 1/2 hour by bus, but he wanted more to do in the immediate campus area. It’s very important to see the campus!

Really?! I loved UMD campus so now I’m really excited to check out OSU i can’t wait. Its just the distance from New York that’s killing me much to far of a car ride. Hopefully its a great enough place to convince me otherwise!!

I have never had an interview in which I was asked about the distinction between a BS in BusAdm and a BS in Finance. Recruiters know that’s how OSU does it, so I don’t believe it makes much of a difference when you are applying for finance positions. However, should you decide later in your career that you want to work in some other business capacity other than finance, you may appreciate the exposure to other business disciplines.

In general, I really enjoy being a Fisher student- I’ve had the opportunity to take some very interesting classes, and I’m a member of a business honors group which has lead to a lot of great opportunities. I love campus, and I’ve enjoyed the classes I’ve taken outside my major as well.

I had a summer internship with a national company after my sophomore year, and I have another internship lined up for this summer. Our job fairs are huge, and a number of major area and national companies recruit here. I interviewed with maybe ten companies fall quarter before accepting an offer. Students report their offers, both internships and full-time, and you can find some of that information here:

Any other questions?

Wow maybell thanks so much for your help!! Just planned my visit so i’m so excited. In regards to business honors group, was that something you were admitted to as a freshman?

Also, I know you have to be admitted to your major, but how difficult is that process? I am a very hardworking student and am confident in my work habits but still it is competitive. I am also under the assumption I have been admitted to Fisher just not my major, is that correct? Thanks so much for the help

I was accepted into OSU’s honors program as a freshman, so I was also admitted directly into Fisher without applying to my major, like all non-honors students are required to.

If you are not in university honors, which comes with priority scheduling and is pretty great by itself, you will need to apply to your major in Fisher- the requirements are different per specialization, with Finance and Accounting having the highest GPA requirement (a 3.4 or 3.5 I think) as they are the more difficult programs.

If you are planning to major in finance, or accounting, I would recommend taking a calculus series higher than business calc. You may do worse grade-wise in these classes, but it is favorably looked upon when you are applying to different programs.

The business honors program I am in is one of three fairly selective honors programs Fisher students can apply for their sophomore years. These are all great programs, and I highly recommend looking into them later- they are the Honors Accounting, Honors Contract, and Honors Cohort groups.

Should I apply to honors? I was considering it for a while but it is 3 additional essays and my SAT is low at 1170/1600 and 1770/2400. My ACT is no better with 26 but I have a 3.85 unweighted GPA all honors AP classes etc. and great extracurriculars. I have also heard the honors program is very hard. I would never doubt my work ethic given im a very driven kid but what do you think?

I believe your scores are probably not high enough to get into honors, as an ACT of 30 or more used to be required, and OSU is becoming more and more selective.

However, all students with high enough GPAs can apply to be in honors once they are at Ohio State. It may be worth doing for the priority scheduling, although you do have to maintain a 3.5-ish GPA, and take several honors or higher level classes each year. Students in honors rarely get locked out of a full class- since we sign up for classes before everyone else.

That makes sense. Maybell I can’t thank you enough you have been such an amazing help I am coming out February 24 for Fisher day and admitted students tour I can’t wait! I am sure I will have more questions after that but in the meantime thanks again for all your help and insight!!

You’re welcome. Make sure you get to tour the RPAC, the Thompson Library, and the Student Union while you’re here. Wear comfortable shoes!
