OSU Engineering vs. UMich Engineering vs. Purdue Engineering

Hi, I am a student planning to be a Mechanical Engineering major. I am an Ohio-Resident and got got a couple scholarships at OSU.

Cost of attendance: $ 21,000 / year at OSU, $ 59,000 / year at UMich and $44,000 / year at Purdue. OSU is a top 20 school for mechE, has a beautiful campus and is great in terms of student life but isn’t quite as highly ranked as Purdue and Umich. My family income is about $80,000. Is it worth it to choose UMich or Purdue despite the high cost?

Absolutely no doubt, I would advise my child to go to OSU. Especially for engineering (my field), I think all three of these are the same caliber, no matter what some ranking “expert” says.

There are other fields like economics that people on CC say the reputation of UMich can really help, but not engineering.

Congrats! OSU is the best choice. Go do amazing things.

nasteeR, I agree with OhiBro and TTG, OSU is your best bet.

Seems like you have one choice that is likely to be affordable.

Be aware, however, that tOSU mechanical engineering major is relatively competitive to get into. You need a 3.4 technical GPA in college to assure admission to the major, although you may apply into a competitive process with at least a 2.8 technical GPA.
