OSU math placement test

What is on the assessment test, and is it hard? I only know up to precalculus and I do not know calculus.

It’s not too hard. The highest level on it is precal, at least the D test

Sent from my MB502 using CC

oh ok thank you.
and is there a time limit on it?

75 minutes is the time limit I think

I don’t mean to hijack this thread, but I have a quick question: If my orientation is not until mid-July, and if I took AP Calculus this year (senior year), would you recommend not taking the placement test, or will my AP scores not be in on time? I sent them to OSU this year, if that makes a difference.

They take the highest out of your score…so if you do better on the AP test, that’s what you’ll test into. If you test higher on OSU’s placement test, then you’ll test into that. There is no benefit to NOT taking the test; I’m not even sure if it’s optional.

Would you recommend any studying, or should I just take it now and wing it?

I would review basic concepts, but not spend too much time…especially if you took the actual AP test.

Is there a summary somewhere of concepts covered on the math placement test? S is in a block schedule HS, and taking honors calc now, getting A’s. However, given block schedule he took trig and analysis almost 2 years ago, algebra 2 as a freshman, geometry soph yr…so any guidance on concepts to brush up on is welcome! Thanks!

My son was in AP calc BC and scored well (5). He took the math placement anyway without studying and found it ridicuolously easy. He was placed out of Math 150/151/152.

I’m freaking out because I don’t know what to expect. I just don’t wanna do so badly that they put me in a dumb math class…

Better to be put in a dumb math class than to be put in one where you are in over your head.

Alright it gave me course U…I called them and they said that meant I either scored too high or too low compared to my ACT score…

It won’t tell me which side of the spectrum I scored in. It makes me really nervous…

How were u guys informed of what you were placed in? I didn’t get any notification after I finished

I thought you get a letter score that translates into a placement. No need to be worried though. I got the impression that you could discuss the placement with your advisor at orientation and he/she could adjust your placement if he/she thinks it is appropriate.

YingYang, can you enlighten us as to general topics covered on the test? S has to take D.

Does anyone know what the lowest course they will place someone in if they take the D test and do poorly?

probably something like math 1148 or 1075, depending on how poorly they do.

Here’s a semester math course list [Courses | Department of Mathematics](http://www.math.osu.edu/courses/homepages.html)

Thanks OSULolz! Very helpful.
Non-math oriented question, is there a website, blog spot or other inside OSU resource with feedback on best and worst profs?

Ratemyprofessor.com (http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/SelectTeacher.jsp?sid=724</a>). Some of us seriously live by that website…I’m not as intense, but many people won’t even take a class unless they can see reviews on this website.

Great gauge for seeing how easy/hard, how grading works, professor clarity/helpfulness, etc. I’d say the comments are the most helpful part

How/when did u guys find out what you were placed in?
