Hey! While deciding where to live on campus next year, the new dorms on North Campus seems very appealing. So, can current students (or anyone else who is familiar with osu) comment on the social life as well as pros and cons of living on North Campus? Thank you very much
From the plans and drawings online, the new dorm area is going to be a small community, with a plaza, town center, walkways, restaurant, etc. I think OSU is going for a neighborhood feel. Not sure how that will fit into your social life expectations. Generally I think that the south part of campus is more social, north more quiet. But my daughter lives on north campus, and loves it. It is as social as she likes, her dorm is lively and always something going on. Some of the kids party a lot, some don’t.
I am assuming current students will weigh in on the forum about south vs north campus social life.
My daughter is going to OSU in the Fall. I am trying to help her with possible dorm selections. Any opinions on North or South campus would be appreciated!
we visited for a second time last weekend, and my son was shown around by his older brother’s good friend who is a junior at OSU now. The info my son was given out of our earshot was that North = nerds, South = party. SO, while we had convinced our son that Scholars was the way to go, since so many Scholar communities are North campus, we may have a battle on our hands when those decisions come out in a few weeks. Having toured inside the Smith-Steib (sp?) dorm during the tour, which is South, the rooms were nice.
The big takeaway for us was also housing style. North dorms are mostly 4 person suites with a 2 bunkbed BR, common area and bath for the 4 kids (which needs to be cleaned by them), where South is more traditional 2 person double rooms with common baths cleaned by the university. There are floorplans by building on the housing site.
While I can’t read into your son’s friend’s meaning when he used the word “nerd”, it sounds like your son believes it has a negative connotation. That’s unfortunate. My understanding is that North Campus is populated by many studious, intellectual students who are good peers to be around. I am proud of my son’s status as one of the “nerds” :).
Thank you all for responding:
For current students/ parents, how has the construction affected the atmosphere of North Campus? Sorry for asking so many questions
I am only a parent, on north campus about twice a month, D is a first year student. I cannot say the construction poses any problem or disruption from my point of view. The construction sites are well contained, neat, not obtrusive and every one seems used to it. Next year some of the dorms will be completed and the students are quite excited about it. My daughter as mentioned above is moving from Haverfield to one of the new dorms on Lane.
I’ve heard from current students & alumni that south campus is generally nice for freshman because a lot of freshman live there and it has a generally social atmosphere. At first I was considering North, but I figure that I can always go to a library if I need some quiet. I was visiting the capus last weekend and the construction is, like someone mentioned above, very manageable to get around. Plus, it’ll be gone by the time we get there for Fall 2015.
