OSU vs UIUC

I live in Ohio and i know it would be cheaper to go to osu over university of illinois but by how much? how are the scholarships and financial aid for both schools? past that, which one is better and why?

What is your intended major?

They are both great Big Ten universities. I live in Chicago, and one thing to keep in mind is that virtually everyone you meet at UIUC will come from the Chicago suburbs. It’s a very hard place to fit in being oos. UIUC tried to raise oos enrollment a few years ago and the legislature, due to pressure from the Chicago burbs, threw a fit.

At Ohio State, you’ll have a good mix of kids from all the Ohio cities as well as a larger oos population.

Psychology is my intended major, which is why I was looking at UIUC

I live in Illinois, went to OSU and have a daughter at OSU now. Illinois is a great school and gets a lot of its rep from its engineering school. That being said, the tuition levels for both instate and out of state students at UIUC are one of the worst in the country. They also do not have scholarships nearly as good as OSU. It was cheaper for my D to go out of state to Ohio than instate Illinois. I am not crazy about UIUC’s campus, and they have a very high Greek rate, something my D is not interested in. It would not be worth the extra tuition to go to Illinois when OSU is a much more affordable in state option. Good luck

Something else, kids from my D’s high school who go to UIUC still hang out with people from their high school, and since it’s a short drive to ISU, kids from the same high school get together often. It seems to be a continuation of the high school party.

I have heard UIUC can seem somewhat like high school. Thank you for your opinion. But should i ignore the fact that UIUC has one of the top ranked undergrad psych programs in the country?

Ohio State’s psychology department is as well regarded as UIUC. Here’s a couple of the primary rankings:

USN&WR
Illinois 7
Ohio State 17

National Research Council
Ohio State 11
Illinois 15

You’ll get a great education and be exposed to some of the top faculty in the world in both departments.
