OSU vs. UMich, is UMich worth the extra $$?

Hi everyone,

I don't post much, but I promise I lurk a lot, and I have a dilemma.

I was admitted into both OSU and UMich, and I am having a hard time deciding between them. I know people on this forum are very knowledgeable and can help me with this decision.

So about me,
Majoring in business or pre-law. Money is not an issue (upper middle class), but it is the main reason for my problem is whether UMich is worth the money. I live on the east coast, so I am out of state for both schools, but I received about 12k worth in scholarships per year at Ohio State, and nothing at Mich, making it exactly half as expensive (23k a year vs 46k a year with all expenses included). I know UMich is ranked better in business, about 20 spots on average (6 vs 26) if you average all of the prominent rankings. Is this alone worth the extra $90,000 that I would have to pay? Is there anything I could do at Michigan that could not be done at Ohio State? Which would be the best for my situation? I've been to both campuses and loved them both, so I am under an increasingly hard decision.

I know that people on this forum will tend to be a bit biased toward UMich, so I would appreciate if you could put that aside in your responses.

Thanks guys!

Looking for unbiased responses - I posted this on the UMich and OSU forums and while the responses were very well thought out, I felt they were a little bit biased. Thanks!

If as you say “money is not an issue” then U Michigan is one of the elite public schools in this country (probably second only to Berkeley). However, if money is a consideration, and if you are persuaded by the latest research, matriculating to the elite school does not result in any improvement in career earnings, so would not be considered money well spent. How’s that for skirting the issue (it is unbiased opinion though)?.

Lol thank you for your response. I said they were biased because on both forums every reply in the other forums was supporting the school’s forum itself (UMich people said UMich, OSU people said OSU), which is why I’m thinking it was a bit of a population bias.

You’ll get a little bit of bias from me but it’s not based on where I live but cost. No school is worth $90K more for essentially the same education. I work with graduates of both schools and both will prepare you for life after college.

If you end up going into business, UMich is definitely worth the extra money, as Ross will offer you much better options career-wise than will OSU.

If you go into law, there won’t be much of a difference in the education, and you need to keep in mind also that you’ll have to pay for law school, so OSU would probably be the better pick.

Good luck wherever you decide to go!
