OSU vs. UofM

I know for many students this is an easy decision due to the intense rivalry between the schools, but I genuinely have no clue which school to attend. I live in Ohio so I have in state tuition and with a $9000 financial aid package (3500 maximus scholarship and $5500 sub/unsubsidized loans), I am forced to pay close to $16000. At UofM I recieved a $10000 scholarship, a $14000 grant, $3000 work study, $1000 perkins loan, and $5500 sub/unsubsidized loans- leaving me close to $17000 to pay out of pocket. At OSU I was accepted into the Engineering program and at UofM I was accepted with early assurance to the Pharmacy School (assuming I maintain B's in all prerequisite courses). My parents will contribute around $12000, leaving me to pay the remainder. So convince me one way or another, as I have no clue what to do. I am not partial to either OSU or UofM oddly enough (born and raised a Notre Dame Fan).

UofM Likes - Strong Academic Reputation, campus

So let me get this straight… you only have to pay 1000 more to attend Michigan over OSU. Shouldn’t this be a no-brainer?

So it’s a $1000 difference to go to Michigan over OSU?.. http://s2.postimage.org/iogjxo4o9/jags.gif

haha although it may seem like a no brainer to you, here in Ohio everyone will convince you it’s the other way around

…doesn’t mean you listen to them. Just because buckeye fans hate Michigan and you happen to live near a lot of them doesn’t make OSU a good school. It is a no brainer.

If everyone in Ohio told you to jump off a bridge, would you?

If two people on the internet told me to jump off a bridge, should I? I asked for convincing not condescension. What makes Michigan so much better?

If you want to be a pharmacist, the odds are strongly in Michigan’s favor with your pre-admit at a top 10 pharmacy school. If you want to be an engineer, Michigan engineering trumps Ohio engineering.

OTOH, if you want to be a buckeye, go to OSU.

Which leads me to my next question… Is it possible to transfer from LSA to Engineering school and how difficult is it to do it?

Not at all if you are a strong student which apparently you are with the scholarship from Michigan.

It’s really easy to transfer into engineering. I’ve had multiple friends do it with no issues, you essentially fill out a form and start registering for engineering classes.

As a life long OSU fan, I say on this one to go blue.

Although tOSU is up-and-coming academically, $1,000 difference is really not enough to justify in terms of overall education quality & value attending Ohio State over Michigan. Plus you will never survive tOSU as a ND fan! So my suggestion is also to go blue! :)

Both my parents are proud Buckeyes but Michigan is the clear choice here-its a better school by almost any measure and costs only $1,000 more. The choice is especially clear since you’re not an indoctrinated Buckeye.

^And now we all understand why you continuously ■■■■■ these boards. Thanks for letting us know you’re just another buckeye fan we can disregard.

^ hahahah yes!

Transfering to the CoE is easy. All you need is a 3.0 GPA in the basic Engineering prerequisite courses, such as Calc 1, 2, 3 and intro Physics and Programming courses.

OSU is a very good universityy and is certainly up and comming. However, Michigan is in a different league altogether.

The only problem I see is this; can you handle watching Michigan spank Notre Dame on the football field for the next four years!!! ;)

Let’s be honest, the only real competition between Ohio and Michigan is on a sports playing surface. For virtually the same cost in your case, the Michigan degree holds more weight. The only reason I could see you attending Ohio is if there is an area of concentration you are interested in that is not offered at Michigan.

My calc is that the difference in cost is $5K/yr. For Ohio, you take the $16.0 you say is your net plus the $5.5 in loans for a cost of $21.5. For UMich it is the $17.0 plus the $3K in work/study (as that is opportunity lost to otherwise work and earn) and $6.5K in loans for a cost of $26.5/yr.

BUT, even at that difference, UMich is still the way to go for your best academic experience.

tOSU is a very good school that is up and coming however, based upon your description of your situation the unemotional choice is obvious;

Michigan overall is a stronger academic university so if you change your mind about a major while in college you have good options for getting into another strong major/curriculum.
2, You are a strong student coming out of HS.

The cost differential whether it is $1K or $5K is relatively minor.

The GPA bar to transfer into Engineering is relatively low.

Go to Michigan the ROI is there if you work hard and go after it.

For what it’s worth, tOSU is going to a semester program starting this fall.
