We are heading down to Williamsburg next week for an overnight stay to visit Colonial Williamsburg. I waited to make reservations in order to see what the best weather days would be, but now the Williamsburg Lodge and several other CW lodging possibilities are totally full! The Governor's Inn had a room left so I took it, but wanted to know if any of you who are residents or know the hotel thought it was OK. We don't need frills, but cleanliness would be nice :) It will just be my d and myself. She wants to due the tours, poke around W&M before heading to Jamestown the next day. I thought it would be best to stay within walking distance while in Wmsburg. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

KK, I cannot speak to Gov.Inn. We have never stayed there. We have stayed at La Quinta on Capitol Landing Rd. It has always been nice and has a free breakfast in the morning. We also have stayed in Hospitality House. Location is great. No free breakfast. Hopefully someone can let you know about Gov. Inn.

KandK, because next week much of the East Coast and almost all of VA is on spring break many of the hotels in the area are filling quickly. The Governor’s Inn is a Colonial Williamsburg Hotel. It’s about a 10-minute walk from campus. There may be some rooms there with outside access so you may want to ask about that.

You can always visit the Williamsburg Hotel/Motel Association ([Go Williamsburg - Hotels, Tickets and Things to Do in Williamsburg, VA](http://gowilliamsburg.com/)) for assistance with a trip to the area.

KandK, we stayed at the Hospitality House located across the street from the campus and a short walk to Colonial Williamsburg. It is a bit pricey, but you can’t beat the location. There was no free breakfast, but we ate at Old Mill (Hospitality House had coupons, and the food was good). Our son was staying in the dorms, but our daughters (16 and 13) liked the food so much we went back for breakfast the next day:).

My d (Class of 2005) has stayed at Governors Inn a good deal when she goes to Williamsburg for alumni events. It’s the most budget-friendly option in the area, and she’s always found it sufficiently clean. It’s a CW resort, and I doubt they’d risk their brand name on mediocre service.

Agree with post 4 - Hospitality House could not be more convenient. It’s a bit shabbier than it was a decade ago (don’t think there’s been a renovation in that time), and it’s quite pricey at times, but a good place to stay if you don’t want to have to worry about parking.

If you don’t mind hunting for parking near campus, I suggest the Hilton Garden Inn about 2 miles down Richmond Road from W&M, where I just had an excellent stay. I do not recommend the Residence Inn that’s nearby on Richmond (quite run-down lately); the Springhill Suites next door was fine a few years ago.

frazzled1, thanks for sharing your d’s experiences. I don’t know how reliable tripadvisor’s reviews are, but it the Governor’s Inn seems to have fairly good recent reviews, even a bit better than Hospitality House, so I think we will go ahead and give it a try. With all that she says she wants to do, I don’t think we will be in the room much anyway and it is only one night. Thanks to all of you who replied. We are looking very forward to our mini-vacation!

I’ve stayed at the Gov. Inn many times on trips to W&M to see my kids and never had a problem. I don’t care about amenities when I’m down there; I just want someplace that’s clean. I like that it’s a Williamsburg property, and like someone else said, maybe they try to keep it at a certain standard because of that. It is a motel, though, so all rooms open directly to the outside, but it’s always filled with tourists, so feels safe. I’m afraid to take a chance on some of the other budget places. The College sometimes leases blocks of rooms to house students (not sure why–maybe overflow??), or one year when there was a fire in one of the dorms.

It’s within walking distance to CW and W&M if you don’t mind a bit of a hike; it’s not super close, but definitely do-able. I’ve never walked. They used to have a free shuttle to CW; I don’t know if it’s still in operation because I always drive to campus. The next step up from Gov. Inn, as far as Williamsburg properties, is the Woodlands at the tourist information center, and I’ve stayed there quite a few times as well. I definitely prefer it to the Gov. Inn, but it’s not walking distance, is a bit more expensive, and is often booked up. Both have a pretty good continental breakfast-good coffee, lots of pastries, yogurt, fresh fruit, cereal, etc. I wouldn’t worry–just know that it’s no frills, and enjoy your trip!

As you can tell, the good news is Williamsburg is not short on hotels. Safe travels!
