what are the dorms like? nice compared to others? be specific

is the school food good?

what do people do there for fun?

any clear characteristic or truth about the school? (for example a response might be, all the asian kids and black kids hang out with their own race)

Hello Freeparking08
Recently we were on campus during the Fall Open House and had time to explore.
The school has a new contract with a business providing the food on campus, and it certainly seemed outstanding to us!
If you want to see what to do for fun, you can see the schedule of events posted on the Bucknell website. I was VERY impressed with all that was going on in mid Nov.
Tom Wolfe was scheduled that week, Campbell Brown scheduled the following week, 311 performed that Sunday. There were a variety of concerts, music groups perform at the very, stylish and comfortable 7th street cafe coffee house, Uptown late night club features music/ open night events. There is a crafts room, the athletic center is dazzling. A shuttle helps get the students off campus to the local Target/ Wall mart. Lewisburg is small, quaint, and does not offer many options for students.

I don't feel qualified to answer your question about minority students and their inclusion on campus.
The Open House was not a typical experience of the student body.
Hope this helps.

Dorms vary, my son stayed in McDonnell last year and it was very nice. He's in a house this year. Also nice.

Son has no complaints about the food.

My son plays in a band, debates, and is active in University Dems. He goes to a lot of the live music events on and around campus, travels to other schools with the debate team, writes for "All That's Left." He found it very easy to become involved his frosh year.

Other kids participate in intermurals, (the gym faciliites are excellent), perform with various a capella/music groups/drama groups; attend sporting events (not football so much but basketball season is already heating up) write for the various campus publications. My son's friend just did his first jump with the skydiving club.

Unless you count being from Texas a "minority" then I can't speak to that either. :) Bucknell is trying to increase the number of minority students in attendance. As with most schools, the stereotypes and myths that are perpetuated here and elsewhere can only be dispelled if you go and visit. If you are looking for preppy Greeks you will find them, you can also find a lot of other interesting kids that are quite different.

Hi Texitaximom - question - as you son is from an "under represented" state - I consider any state not in the NE as under represented at Bucknell. We're from Florida - My mommy question is - "how is traveling home on Thanksgiving/Christmas? Where do you fly out from? Does your son get special privleges to leave campus early to catch a plane. On other 3 day/4 day weekends does the campus empty out with all the NE students heading home? Thanks in advance for your help.

Susan

I don't know that they would let somene leave early...he hasn't asked. His exam schedule has varied--last December he got home a week early because his last exam was December 10th. This year he can only clip a day off. For Thanksgiving he has always traveled on Wednesday, and attended classes Tuesday.

My son flies out of Harrisburg, and there is a cheap shuttle from the school to that airport. Some fly out of Williamsport which is smaller, generally more expensive, and requires more connecting. Philly is the cheapest, but you need to hitch a ride (freshman can't have cars). I would suggest using Philly (cheap rental cars) for things like Parent's weekend and moving in where you can rent the car and drive to Lewisburg. For winter break the shuttle also runs to JFK for international flights.

And of course there is always the bum a ride off your roommate/floormate if they are going back to another airport area and don't mind giving you a lift.

As for the weekends--my son comes home only when they lock the dorms. He loves it there, and would rather spend his weekends on campus or road trip to another school. The campus is definitely not a "suitcase school"...there is plenty to do on even the long weekends, and the events are well attended.

Thanks for the info....
