I was wondering...what other health care fields are there besides doctors, nurses, and pharmacists (and the like)? I really want to be in health care...I will be doing pre-med, but I know that competition to medical school is tough, and I just want to know my alternatives. Is there anything I can do in Public health/epidemiology too? I would love to be a doctor because I genuinely desire to help people, but if there's a similar job (that's not so chem/math heavy as pharmacy, and more prestigious than nursing), I'd like to explore that too. Thanks :)

Here are some other options -

Clinical Researcher either as
-an MD, or MD/MPH, or
-PhD in Pharmacoloy or Physiology,
-or PharmD, or
-Masters in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

As a clinical researcher, you could work either in Pharmaceutical industry in drug development of drugs with novel mechanisms of action (either in Clinical Pharmacology area or in Phase II/III work). Alternatively you could choose to work in one of the branches of NIH conducting clinical research, CDC (with a Public Health combo degree), or work with the FDA to approve drugs.

I worked as a Clinical Pharmacologist for 14 years initially, then moved to Clinical research Phase III area for a few years, now I oversee entire project development, right from preclinical toxicology through NDA approvals. It's an extremely fulfilling experience for me to know that I am doing my utmost to bring new therapies for the unmet need in Neurodegenerative disease area, work in an effort to alleviate morbidity, and add quality years to patients' lives.

It may not pay as much as having independent practice for a specialist I suppose......but it's certainly extremely fulfilling and has guided me on a purpose driven career path.
