Hi everyone. I previously posted on here about a psychology major and after great feedback have decided to go back to accounting since I enjoyed the classes and I hope to one day own my own business. Although I love the accounting courses and information learned, I do not want to work as an accountant. Are there other opportunities besides finance and accounting with a accounting degree. Like Marketing or management positions. I have always loved the fashion industry and this is my main goal but I do not see a need to major in fashion. Are there opportunities in fashion for an accounting major?
Business in every industry of any size need an accountant or accounting department. They needs someone to track and report on income, expenses and profit, receivables, payables, etc. Learn to work with spreadsheets to prepare projections to help them be profitable.
I’m not sure what career track you want. I have seen accounting and finance people move into management positions because they understand how the business side works, where someone else will be the creative director and choose products to offer.
Thanks for the reply. I am a creative individual and would not see fit a career in accounting or finance but as a major I believe the classes are full of useful information and I do not mind studying. I would like to potentially go into fashion/retail buying or marketing and one day own a retail store but am unsure if an accounting degree would help in those areas besides being an entrepreneur.
(Yikes - I changed what I wanted to say and always see my typos after the edit window ends.)
I think the best thing would be to research those career positions and try to find someone who currently holds those positions to tell you the paths.
Have you considered majoring in marketing with a minor or concentration in accounting, economics or finance?
I would suggest maybe you’re looking at this in too short of a horizon.
Instead of wondering what jobs you can get in the fashion industry with an accounting degree, maybe you should be looking at actual accounting jobs in fashion. Get in the door, understand the math of fashion, and work your way from the inside into another function. Understanding the financials of the business will always be valuable, and it enables endless executive opportunities.
It’s not easy, but I would think it’s more likely that you get into finance using a specific skill set like accounting.

@theburquena I have thought about marketing with a finance minor but I was told that marketing would be useless and I should study something more practical in case I need a back up plan. My career advisor mentioned a managerial science major with an emphasis in business Analysis with enough room to minor in marketing. I have thought of choosing this route
@EyeVeee that’s great advice! I just didn’t want my major in accounting to force me to be an accountant or work in financial services since that is not my main reason for choosing this major. I love the material and what I learn but ill definitely look into what internships I can get in that area of fashion before I graduate
