Other schools like berkeley needed

Hi, looking for schools that are

1) well-rounded in every field, but with especially with excellent science programs

2) With a fun, lively student body - nothing in the middle of nowhere, please. Another example would be Duke.

3) Around UC Berkeley-tier, but can be lower. Don't name any Ivies, please.

4) Not a LAC

Any suggestions??

Michigan of course!

any uc’s are good and the california states universities are good too

UNC-Chapel Hill

Are you in-state for UC Berkeley?

Is money no object? If you’ll be needing aid, most OOS publics cannot meet the need of OOS students. If money isn’t an issue, then GREAT!!! :)

What are your stats?

UVirginia can meet need, and it’s highly ranked.

UChicago

VANDERBILT!!! It’s in Nashville - a very fun campus and very fun city!!! :)

Rice is in a big city, but it’s in Houston - awful weather. (apologies to those who live in Houston).

-Michigan
-Wisconsin
-Texas

Those three are all pretty dang similar to Berkeley and very good themselves.

For slightly smaller schools that fit your criteria, similar to Duke, I’d look at:

-UNC
-Vanderbilt
-Notre Dame
-Georgetown
-Boston College
-Virginia
-Rice

agree with Texas… Austin is quite similar to Berkeley in many ways. And quite a few UT-Austin administrators have gone on to lead Berkeley and the UC System!

I would add the following schools to MNTwins’s excellent list:

USC

Washington (UW)

Tulane

U Miami

OP, here’s a list of schools I think are comparable, similar and peer schools of Berkeley:

Cornell
UPenn
Northwestern
Michigan
The Claremont Collages Consortium

Schools similar to Berkeley but slightly less prestigious:

Emory
USC
UCLA
UCSD
UNC
Wisconsin
CMU
Georgetown

Peer schools or schools similar to Berkeley but smaller:
Rice
Chicago
JHU

U of Colorado, U of Arizona, U of Oregon, Boston U.

How are these schools like/similar to Berkeley?

4) Not a LAC

no offense meant, but those are almost “never-heard” schools.

Berkeley is famous. Those schools aren’t.

The OP is presumably less picky than you, because (s)he specifically noted that schools could be lower tier.

None of those are weak universities, and each of them has strengths in certain fields that can match Berkeley (ecology at Colorado, anthropology at Arizona, zoology at Oregon and Oregon State, music, marine science, and archaeology at BU, etc.).

More importantly, everyone needs safeties and matches. You’re going to have a lot of disappointed rejects in April if you encourage them to only apply to highly selective universities!

(That said, I’m not sure I would classify BU as having a “fun, lively student body.” Boston is nice, yes, but campus life is decidedly dull.)
