I’m a senior filling out all the applications and essays I can right now. It is very stressful. But I’m still curious of some schools I should consider looking at. My schools I’m applying to right now are: villanova is my number one, clemson, Boston university, providence, richmond, wake forest, college of the holy cross, and university of Illinois. My ACT is a 28 but I’m taking two more tests and I know I can get a 31. I want schools with a great business school. I’m open to any location. Are there any schools that I should look at that are equal to the ones I’m already applying to, and are there any safety schools I should consider adding to my list. Thank you.
How much can your family afford for a safety school? It must be affordable to be called a safety.
Some information that could be helpful to know here: What state do you live in? (Illinois?) Can you parents pay full price for these schools? And can you give your weighted and/or unweighted GPA?
If you don’t really need financial aid, Fordham might be good. It’s in a city, has an undergraduate business school, and is less difficult to get into than some of your options.
If finances are a big concern, you really should apply to at least one and probably two in-state public schools. I believe that Richmond, Holy Cross, and WF at least say they meet 100% of demonstrated need, but I don’t think the other schools on your list do. And even if a school says it meets full demonstrated need, it may not be enough for your family in particular.
@“Erin’s Dad” we don’t really have any drawbacks. So any price
@Wilson98 I live in Illinois yes. My parents can pay full price. My gpa weighted is 3.74
If u improve ACT, check out Florida State , Iowa, Purdue, & Kentucky. If u don’t improve, check out Kansas, Nebraska, & Oklahoma State.
I think you have a great list. Have you visited Wake Forest and/or interviewed? That is definitely a factor in admissions. It offers Skype interviews as well. You’ll like the business school. Academics are excellent, same at Holy Cross, really as good as anywhere. Richmond also has a good business school. One that impressed us: Santa Clara University: mid-size; suburban but near SF (and 49ers play there); spectacular weather; very good business school; right in Silicon Valley, so terrific internship opportunities. Good luck!
@TTG I have visited Wake Forest and I did do an interview. I felt very confident after the interview. The school was stunning. I want to check out Santa Clara. I have heard great things about it. I’m just nervous since a lot of my schools are kind of reach schools. I hope I can get into them.
Creighton University is another one. I’m not familiar with the business school, but otherwise I liked the school. Omaha seems like a fun city and seems to be doing really well economically, so I’d imagine internship opportunities are good. It seems like a relatively “hot” school right now but definitely accessible for you. I think there are relatively few top-notch but accessible mid-size universities in the Midwest, which puts it in a nice place You are applying to other Catholic schools, so it makes sense on your list as well.
Indiana University has a beautiful campus and a very good business school.
Wake really claims to be legitimately test optional. They really look at grades. You’d probably want to submit anything over 30 on the ACT, maybe a 30, though a precise answer, I’d imagine, is impossible because it probably depends on what the overall application looks like.
Think about adding Fordham and Tulane to your list. Not quite a safeties but you should hear back by December if you apply non-binding EA so if you get in by then it can be your safeties.
Babson if you are committed to business, one of the best undergrad business schools. And another vote for Santa Clara.
@Magnetron what did you like about Santa Clara?
@Jsan81 I’m not really impartial because a lot of my mother’s extended family has gone there and there used to be a building on campus with her name on it. The Seattle area also sends a bunch of kids down there; one of my son’s friends just graduated. S1 was going to apply until he talked to a real tool from admissions. Don’t let something that trivial deter you.
The campus and the weather are both exceptional. It’s location in Silicon Valley is hard to beat, easy access to one of the most important economic areas in the world and they take advantage of it, working the education into the surrounding industry. It’s an easy train ride from SF for a city fix. Reports I hear from parents are the kids are pleased with the academics.
Sorry my information isn’t really first hand - you can try connecting through the SCU discussion page.
Thanks so much. Only problem I have with it is that it’s so far away from. @Magnetron
If you are looking at schools like Villanova, Boston U, and Holy Cross, them other strong business options might be Lehigh and Fordham. Lehigh is literally in the same league (the Patriot League) as BU and HC, and has lots of applicant overlap with nearby Villanova. Fordham plays football in the Patriot League with Lehigh and HC, and is a Catholic school like HC and Villanova.
Seconding Creighton, Babson, and Fordham.
What is your UNWEIGHTED GPA?
Weighted 3.74 + ACT 28 make all the schools you listed reaches.
Since you don’t need financial aid, apply to Penn State for “DUS”, complete the ‘entrance to major’ classes, and graduate from Smeal. PSU DUS is a safety for you as long as you apply before November 30.
(DUS means you’re undecided for your major but you can still register for the Business Freshman seminar and all the Smeal pre-reqs, in fact 10% Smeal students are pre-admits and 90% come from DUS, and all have to complete the same requirements anyway).
Another school you should consider is Bentley.
If I get my GPA up to a 31 do I have any possibly change of getting into University of Michigan? I know that still puts me at a low chance but one thing is that I started my own company and and have my own website. Would that greatly increase my chance not only at Michigan possibly but at all my choices?
The average OOS ACT at UMichigan is 33-34, so no 31 wouldn’t help.
As indicated before, your best bet if you want to get into a strong Business school at a large University is to apply to PSU before November 30 checking DUS. (You’ll get in. Then it’s up to you to make the grade to get into Smeal.)
UF doesn’t consider major but I don’t think you will get in due to the high GPAs of admitted students.
maybe smu - in highschool i liked the size of villanova with the warmth of clemson and then i ended up here. Great decision for what i was looking for which seems similar to you!
