Other schools you applied to

My son ('15) has identified BC as a school of interest. I’d like to know what other schools appeal to students who like BC. What other colleges did you apply to? If you’d care to - please indicate those that you consider safeties, reaches, etc. Thanks!

Holy Cross (Match), Northeastern (Match), Bentley (Match/Safety), UMass Amherst (Safety)

Tufts (Low Reach), Wesleyan (Reach), Villanova (Match), University of Rochester (Match), BU (Low Match), SUNY Geneseo (Low Match/Safety), Siena College (Safety).

I wouldn’t consider all of these to be similar to BC, though, so be wary. I think Villanova is probably the most comparable to BC from my list.

Check out the Fiske College Guide. The excerpts on the schools can give you a good feel for the atmosphere of the school. It also has a part where they have asked each school to give a list of similar schools, according to the college itself.

Dear joisymom : Visit the Boston College web site and search for the current edition of the BC Fact Book. Each year, entering freshmen complete a survey (done during the registration process of your summer orientation session) naming other schools over which Boston College was chosen. That survey is summarized in the Fact Book.

BC was always my top choice. After going to a Catholic HS, I knew I wanted to go to a Catholic or Jesuit institution. That being said, I applied EA to Providence, Fairfield, and Fordham, all of which were safeties. I found that Fordham was very much like BC (it was my second top choice). I personally did not like Holy Cross, but I know it is often said to be like a smaller BC.

Kids from Southern California who apply to BC also seem to apply to USC. Perhaps its the color scheme.

A few of mine are Georgetown, Dartmouth, UVA, and Tufts.

We’ll see how it goes on acceptance day!!

Wow carbs2 BC is the safety in that group…unless UVA is in-state. Nice list.

I was actually told by an admissions officer what the highest crossover apps were. I remember most of the Ivy League, Tufts, Georgetown, BU, and NYU. She noted she never understood the last two since they’re very different schools from BC.

What’s not to understand? Some 18-year-olds just focus on the Big City, any big city. I have no doubt that both colleges receive thousands of applications solely because they are in a great City, and nothing to do with the colleges’ academic offerings. The same is true for at many other urban campuses.

btw: Perhaps this is one of many reasons why BC added an essay prompt this year.

Yeah NYU and BU are wayyyy different. So much more urban.

And yeah, the rest are mostly reaches, but I already got into BC so hopefully that’s a good sign!!

D was also already accepted and overlaps with one of yours - UVA. She was deferred from there but that school is so, so competitive OOS. Others for her are WashU and Michigan (admitted EA). Interesting that Tufts is on your list as well…she was all excited about Tufts but after visiting knocked it off the list. No great reason just wasn’t into it.

I actually am applying to WashU as well! I added it very last minute and still have to do a lot more research, which is why I didn’t put it not that list. I was also deferred from UVA out of state! I guess we have very similar taste in schools : )

I think so - no G’town (although we visited) or Dartmouth for her.

Do you have a top choice or are you just waiting for all answers first?

Yale, Duke, Stanford, Columbia, Michigan, Boston College itself, Michigan State, and Fordham were my 8 (accepted by MSU and Fordham already).

Impressive list Cof213!

And I’m just waiting to hear so that I can keep an open mind! Or at least that’s what I tell myself. In reality, I have no clue where I want to go…

Last year:

NYU, USC, Georgetown, Michigan, Emory, WUSTL, Cal-Berkeley, UCLA.

I got into USC, Michigan, and BC (obviously). WL-ed, rejected everywhere else

AskJ,

I get that each person sees a school differently in terms of fit for them but any special reason as to why BC over Michigan for you? My D is making that decision and is really torn (it will only get worse if she gets in UVA and/or WUSTL).

In my case it was for various reasons. I actually had my heart set on going to Michigan until the last minute. For one, I live in New England, so Ann-Arbor isn’t exactly an afternoon’s drive away. The other major reason was because I was set on studying/majoring in finance since HS, and I was admitted directly into CSOM whereas I was rejected from Ross pre-admit. At the time I just felt it was a safer and more secure choice for me to go to BC.

Makes sense…and so far so good at BC for you? Happy with your decision?
