Are there any other ways we can get the medical experience in high school. I volunteer at a local hospital since December 2005 and I shadowed one doctor. Most of you will encourage shadowing more but it is not as easy around my part of the country as it is everywhere else. Is it possible to get an internship or research or anything like that? Let's keep in mind I am only 16 years old.

Generally as much experience as you can get is wonderful, but if most opportunities don't open up to you until you've taken, say, organic chemistry, there is no need to panic.

I have no idea whatsoever how to get associated with these sorts of things in high school.

I was trying to explain to you that it's not that important; as a standard premed candidate, the things you did in high school don't matter to medical schools.

If you applying for BA/MD programs, then that's a different ballgame, and one with which I am wholly unfamiliar.

you could do volunteering things like at the soup kitchen, nursing homes, etc. Habitat for humanity? work at a local shelter...tons of stuff you can put on even if its just in HS

But, for example, VCU's guaranteed admission has a whole section for medical-related experiences and so far I only have 2: Volunteering at a hospital and shadowing 1 doctor.

get a job at the hospital? work as a nurses assistant, porter (some1 who pushes around the beds), some sort of secretary or w/e...might wanna shadow some more doc's

yes of course...obviously nothing spectacular...do u have n e connections? lol....like if you know a doctor really well he could talk to the hospital administration and they could set somethin up....the job would obviously be minor but it can work

You could check on getting a CNA and then be able to work in hospital with direct patient care. I have no idea how long cna takes, but look at community college. Our high school also gave classes that led to that certificate. Another option might be to look at local free clinics--they are always looking for volunteers.

I'm not sure what a CNA is sorry. Is it possible to get internships over the summer or at least something I could do over the summer besides volunteering and shadowing some doctors?

CNA--certified nurse assistant
You could check into taking classes towards an EMT (emergency medical technician)
Some physician groups will take on unpaid interns at your age--but it will still be more like shadowing. Though my brother is an orthopedist and their group has hired a high school student last two summers who wants to go to med school and he has done various jobs around the practice, but I think alot has been clerical or computer related.

I have looked into various hospitals around my region (Suburbs of Seattle, WA) and all of them have internships for college students. Are there any camps I can look into like U-Doc in Washington State preferrably?

I just feel like I need more hospital experience if I stand a chance at some BA/MD programs.

Wow, it seems so obvious, but I never thought of that.

I'm guessing most of them volunteered or shadowed. I need something that stands out on applications. Is there anything like that I could do over the summer?
