Yea. i realized that i really need to find some match schools that excel in the science area, but i dont know any besides johns hopkins, carnegie mellon, etc. (is georgetown, boston college and williams good at science too?) So i was wondering whether you know any other pretty selective yet not as difficult as ivies, mit, stanford, etc. schools. Thanks for any advice!

University of California, Berkeley
University of California, Los Angeles
University of Wisconsin, Madison
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

Look at the CC Top Uni's forum - most if not all of the universities there have top science programs.

UCSD was rated "hottest for science" by Newsweek.

My bad... I definitely didn't mean to exclude UCSD

Harvey Mudd

caltech of course

Cal Tech is about as hard to get into as Ivies, MIT, Stanford, etc.

Are you taking about hard sciences or engineering?

Most "sciency" schools I know are actually probably strongest at engineering. Anyway, a list along with how hard it is to get in:

Tier 1: Olin, Cal Tech

Tier 2: Harvey Mudd, UC Berkeley, U Michigan, Carnegie Mellon, UCLA, UCSD, Johns Hopkins, WUSTL (I think)

Tier 3: Purdue, Cal Poly SLO, Georgia Tech

Here are the 100 colleges an universities that have the highest percentage of their graduates going on to get a PhD in science, math, or engineering over the most recent 10 year period. It might give you some good ideas:

haha, I got into an HYPSM (the only one I applied to), but not into Duke....:) you never know...

Anyways, Purdue is excellent, along with GaTech, which is actually getting harder to get into. Case Western is also an up and coming engineering university.

This is a reasonable approach, but there is one point worth mentioning. Most of the LACs on this list (with a few exceptions, notably Swarthmore and Mudd) don't have engineering programs, and therefore relatively few graduates get PhDs in engineering. If the list only addressed science and math PhDs specifically (and did not include engineering PhDs) then most LACs would rank significantly higher.

Furman has a state-of-the-art chem dept, if that's what you're interested in.

http://www.isp.northwestern.edu/alum...etter_2005.pdf has brief biographies of the 2005 ISP graduates. Most them had carried out independent research with their journal articles being published.

ISP is supposed to be just a 3-yr program! But many ISP students do double major:
[quote]
Although listed in a three-year format, many students spread the program over four years, often to combine an ISP major with a second major in a more traditional (i.e., Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics) department. Double majors in other areas such as economics are possible as well.
