Other West Coasters attending OCU?

My S will be joining the MT program in the Fall. Would really love to hear common experiences, advice, etc.

My daughter just decided on OCU for MT, too. We’re in NJ–so both coasts will be represented in their class!

That’s so great! Love that the East Coast is representing!

Has your son seen the Facebook group for the class? It’s Oklahoma City University MT 2016.

Thanks for the heads-up! He had not seen it yet.

Hi. I live in LA, and I am probably going to go to OCU. I was actually accepted into the Acting School, but am going to try to transfer departments in the Fall, which they tell me happens all the time.
I am also a Jr. Transfer, so I don’t know if I would actually have class with either of them although, I would be in the Freshman Acting Workshop or whatever that is. Also, maybe we could end up in a/ show/s together.

Wondering if you guys have been and seen the town. It’s going to take an awfully huge adjustment to get used to the small town thing. I kind of like it, though — no distractions.

Maybe I’ll see you in August.

Can you guys please come back and let us know how you like the program? OCU is pretty high up on my D’s list for next year, so we would love to hear some first hand experiences from freshmen (and transfers)!

Can do. Assuming I remember.
I can tell you, that so far they have been extremely helpful and friendly. They have put me in contact with no less than 5 counselors and people to help me with my application, submitting documents, setting up the audition, financial info, academic planning, etc.
Just, in comparison to the other schools to which I applied, they have been way more helpful. The students were also extraordinarily friendly when I was there for my audition.

Hi - I’m a mom, so I can only report from my perspective. My son, who will be a junior in the fall, is REALLY pleased with his experiences so far @ OCU. He was accepted other places and we (his father and I) urged him to go to OCU because we felt he would recieve the best BROAD training experience there. Most schools make you choose MT or Classical/Opera training, don’t allow auditioning the first year, and other limiting activities. OCU requires you to study and audition for both MT and opera experiences. I kept thinking, “Why does such an amazing program have to be located in Oklahoma?” It was the only drawback. But - it has been a GREAT fit for him, and he has learned so much there. He is in Lisa Regan Love’s studio, and has the utmost respect for her. There is a great sense of comraderie within the studios, and the small size allows everyone to interact with and learn from each other. Couldn’t be more pleased!

^ When it’s the right fit it is a marvelous thing! It was a good fit for my son also.

@sheilaostl, can you tell me how it works when they put on a MT show? Do both MT and opera students audition and get cast? For example, would they give all the legit soprano roles to the opera/classical students as opposed to any legit sopranos they may have in the MT department?

monkey, everyone is required to audition for all productions, MT students audition for musicals and operas, same for VP students. And they do a lot of cross casting. All cast are a mix of MT & VP.
