Just a heads up, if you are National Merit and taking summer classes don’t panic when you see your bill (like I did!) There is a delay getting the tutition waivers posted. It should be fixed by June 5th.
@3scoutsmom
Can you clarify how the tuition waiver for NM summer school works? I forgot to get clarification on that while we were there.
Is it simply a waiver? OR does it eat up one of the “10 paid semesters”?
Tangentially, they mentioned “banking” credit hours to “pay” for summer study abroad. Is that the same or different as summer school waiver?
It’s a waiver for tuition and the OOS tuition, it does’t effect the the fitth year option. You still have to cover the fees in our case it was $803 for a 3 credit research Meterology Honors class that she can use to meet one of her honors college requirements. I haven’t a clue about banking hours.
I found this but it doesn’t really apply to national merit since you aren’t charged for tuition. http://askbursar.ou.edu/customer/portal/articles/2005196-what-are-summer%C2%A0banked-hours-
@3scoutsmom - So your D didn’t need to take a full-time summer load - 6 credits - for the tuition waiver? I thought that was one of the requirements.
My understanding, the full-time load its 12 hours for fall/spring and it is 6 hours for summer. Hence 6 hours is considered full time load. My D doing 6 hours this summer.
But realize this has impact on the OKLAHOMA ACADEMIC SCHOLARS PROGRAM component since that component is based on semester $2750. Being summer the amount will be given only $1375 and it is counted towards the total of 8 semesters. In other words, if you plan to do 4 years (8 semesters), you are reducing the amount eligible by $1375.
@GoldenRock Really? So, essentially, taking summer classes “costs” the student $1375 in Oklahoma Academic Scholars funds over the course of their 8 semesters? I don’t see a credit from those funds on the summer bursar statement, only for the NM tuition waiver.
No they changed the rules a few years ago, national merit will cover tuition both in state and out of state with no minimum credits. They will not cover the “fees” there is a way to use some of the Ok academic scholarship funds to cover fees but as @GoldenRock stated that would reduce the total available from that part of the scholarship. We just paid the fees out of pocket. Still a great deal for us.
At first the financial statements did not reflect the NMS credits last month. But when I called, bursar office told, it is a mistake and they corrected and re-issued a new statement. My D opted to get the $1375 credit (and hence used up 3 semesters out of 8 for OK academic scholars component since she plans to graduate in 3 years) and hence we paid the final bill of $270 or so (primarily the ‘fees’).
@3scoutsmom an @GoldenRock - Thank you for your replies. So if I am understanding correctly, if you want the OK academic scholars component to cover summer school costs it needs to be specifically requested?
Yes! In goldenrock’s case it’s the smart thing to do since his child will only be at OU for 3 years mine will be there for 4 to 5 to finish a master’s - unless she changes her mind yet again!
