OU Petroleum Engineering

Howdy everyone,

I was digging through some OU petroleum engineering information the other day on their website and I found this status report. Could anyone comment on this? Opinions?

Is it like this at many other Petroleum Engineering Programs?

For the first time in several years we are seeing a reversal in undergraduate enrollment trend. Still the total numbers of undergraduate students is a very healthy number of 428. The reversal of the trend likely is related to the state of the energy industry. An area of real concern is the lack of job offers to the graduating class of 2010. At this time only 30% of the May graduates have a firm job offer which leaves about 50 students with no job offers. These numbers are very worrisome as this time last year 80% of the graduating class had job offers. Based on feedback from students, it is clear that this year there has also been a drop in numbers of offers for summer internships. Even though there has been no significant drop in the number of companies interviewing on campus there has been definitely a drop in the number of job and internship offers.

TAMU got 100% placement of 2010 grads i think, tech also. I know all the students at UH got internships for what that is worth. And, what is the state of the petroleum industry, it seems the energy stocks are doing well. The price of oil is also up…

That is good to hear entropy2009, considering A&M is my first choice. I was considering OU as my back up though and reading that surprised me. I was under the impression that OU had a decent enough program to place more than 30% of graduates. What is your opinion on OU?

yo entropy, do you have numbers for UT?

One quick note: the report you are discussing was for 2009 graduates. I don’t have 2010 data, but I think it might be more positive. I know MPGE had 100% placement in 2005.

That’s good to hear.

Would you figure a new report would be composed at the beginning of this year or sometime around there?

^ I really don’t know. You could try emailing somebody and asking about placement rates last year…

OU Sucks

Hook Em’ \m/

I look at it like this. These companies are actively dumping money into certain programs for them to produce petroleum engineers, so why would they not be hiring them? I would like to hear more about this, as I am going into this field next semester.

I would like to hear about this as well, because I will be entering next fall.

yOU
the reason why Texans say “y’all”

Could anyone comment?

Your best bet is email a Petroleum Engineering senior at OU and ask how is the major and his internship/job prospects look like.

Entropy2009, where are you getting your info from? I talked to one of the students in petroleum at UH and he tolded me that only 2 people out of his class had internships.

could a chemical engineer major get a job as a petroleum engineer easily?

Sorry that I typed “tolded.” Now I’ll have to change my name. LOL

TAMU got 100% placement of 2010 grads i think

-NOT TRUE.it was like 70 %

I go to TAMU and I’ve heard from fellow students that 100% of the 2010 class had jobs by the end of the summer, but I haven’t seen proof.

Where did you see 70%?

It’s hard to get the true figures from these schools, especially when it’s not 100%.

I heard that last year it was very close to 100. Supposedly at the end of the year a bunch of service companies came in to hire people with crap GPAs for cheap.

I read it on CC itself !
