Ouch!!! Financial Aid

I just received my financial aid explanation from Northwestern today. Though I knew it wasn't going to be great, their offer ended up being worse than expected (they offered $54,000 in loans).

I have applied for a number of scholarships, but I haven't received any substantial awards yet. Though my parents (mom and stepdad) do well, it definitely is not enough to cover the $54,000 cost of NU. I think a big reason why the expected contribution was so high is because my father's income is factored in, despite the fact that I haven't spoke with him in years and he will not be contributing money to my education.

Obviously, I would love to go to Northwestern, but putting over $130,000 (at least) on credit does not seem prudent. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can try to make a NU education more affordable, or should I just throw that dream out the door and head to state school?

If that’s really the situation with your father, let them know! Did you write about that on the FAFSA or profile? If not, that’s a serious “special circumstance” you left out. Call the financial aid office as soon as you can, see if you can set up a meeting or conference or appeal somehow. I’m sure they’ll make it a little easier on you once they’re fully informed about your situation.

there’s an official process for appealing FA; go to the NU financial aid website. it’s somewhwere around there.
